introduction to Therapeutic yoga holiday in Spain

This small group six day holiday is suitable for anybody wishing to practice yoga under close supervision in a restful environment, away from the demands and distractions of daily life at home. Whether you are a complete beginner wanting to start yoga with good technique or to build on and deepen your existing yoga practice, you will benefit from that extra level of coaching and supervision

Breakfast and vegetarian dinner with healthy amounts of local wine will be provided. We will be in the medieval city of Trujillo, in Spain’s Extremadura region. Trujillo is a granite hill-top “city” of only 9,800 inhabitants crowned by a 9th century Moorish castle and sitting amidst rugged, mountain ringed countryside.

You’ll find history here – this is the birthplace of Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of the Incas - and also modern Spain with its optimism, exuberance and love of life. Much of Trujillo’s life revolves around the delightfully theatrical town square where cafés and restaurants abound for your refreshment and people-watching pleasure and rural peace is never more than a short stroll away. We hope you’ll find it a refreshing alternative to the middle-of-nowhere type of retreat. There will be time off in your day for sampling tapas, exploring the city, browsing shops and pool - side relaxation in the summer months.

José Manuel Ponce has been teaching ha-tha yoga since 1982 and has been a full-time registered osteopath in London since 1989. He synthesizes physical therapy approaches with ha-tha yoga to enable individuals to look after their own well being.

yoga workshop themes
  • Experiential yoga-based workshop on principles of how your spine and pelvis work as a basis for understanding safety in yoga and daily activities.
  • Exploring the art of sitting in yoga and daily activities.
  • The impact of breathing on your health. Yoga breath work theory and practice.
  • Understanding the physical impact of stress on your body: relaxation and meditation techniques for combating stress.
how this holiday makes a difference
Or aim is to:
  • Provide people with a set of tools to participate in the maintenance of their well-being through an understanding of the issues impinging on their health and an action plan based on yoga in a relaxed holiday setting, away from the stresses of home and work, in a place which is congenial to relaxation in inland Spain
  • We endeavour to take or participants to the ‘real’ Spain by basing ourselves in the centre of a historic town, and will facilitate contact with the economy and culture of the place by providing information on local events and activities / projects, and bridging language barriers to this end.
  • We aim to support the local economy by encouraging the use of local services to provide employment. We also aim to minimize the possible negative impact of tourism on the social, economic and physical environment and maximize benefit to visitors and host culture by providing information on services and activities outside of the organized course.
Airport to destination transfer will be mainly or entirely by public transport. Some participants may choose to travel from the airport to the bus station by private taxi, but details of public transport alternatives will be given to all. Beyond this, the 255km stretch from Madrid to our final destination in Trujillo will be by public coach (AutoRes).

We do not need air conditioning as the yoga studio is in a granite built house which remains cool in the summer heat. We also choose our course dates in order to avoid the very hot or cold times of the year. We use low energy bulbs for lighting and recycle all materials permitted by the local authority and provide information for recycling to our participants.

To minimize water usage in this water-poor area participants will use the public municipal pool which is surrounded by grass and trees for shade and has a café-bar as well as separate kids’ pool. Written guidelines for minimizing water usage will be given in the travellers’ code of conduct sheet.

Brief historical description of the region and the city, as well as language, and current political situation is given to orientate and contextualize travellers’ experience. The importance of travel / tourism for the local economy will be emphasized: the town’s main industry is tourism-based, which is itself based on the city’s historical monuments.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
