introduction to Self catering gites in the Ardeche, France
Renovated to a very high standard in 2003, Les Beaux Terroirs is nestled between the rolling vineyards of the Rhone Valley and the rugged gorges of the Ardeche region. The four gites are well equipped and are looked after by a person living locally in order to offer advice and support to guests (as well as to keep the place looking 100%!).
Les Beaux Terroirs is a great spot for mixing active and relaxed days. There is plenty to do nearby whilst the pool is a great spot to unwind and to soak up some Provence sunshine.Walking Cycling Canoeing Wine tasting Many more activities available in the nearby Ardeche region such as horse riding, adventure parks, swimming, caving, climbing...
Walking and cycling: Great trails start from right on the doorstep. There are plenty of manageable walks/rides around the vineyards, by the river and in the forested hills that do not require transport. In spring and autumn traffic is light and the weather and road surfaces are great for road cycling. The area has a huge network of well signposted walking and cycling routes as well as plenty of riverside and forest picnic spots.
Swimming pool: The pool is situated away from the gites with a stunning sunset view down the river valley. Take a dip, pull up a sun lounger and enjoy the vista…
By train: The Eurostar also runs directly from London to Avignon each Saturday.
By car: Calais is a 9 hour drive along excellent French motorways.

Environment
Although France is a popular destination for many UK based travellers, we believe that the Ardeche is a unique place within this familiar country. We intend to show our guests its charm and scenery whilst not imposing ourselves upon it. The region’s incredible landscape is the reason that so many people visit and it must be cared for and respected above all other considerations. The gites have become actively involved in local recycling initiatives, ensuring that everything possible is transported away to be re-used. Garden and food waste is used on our vegetable patch and the produce (tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, lettuces, carrots) is gladly consumed by our clients! We encourage our guests to limit their use of water (whilst staying clean and hydrated!) and make the most of natural water sources for gardening etc. We also encourage them to recycle their paper, glass and plastics. We offer airport/train terminal transfers and bicycle hire for those that would rather not use a car. We intend to give all of our guests an opportunity to become familiar with our Code of Conduct through our booking information and website. We operate an electronic system of bookings, accounting and administration. We do not believe in large scale print advertising. In these ways we can minimise our use of paper and ink cartridges. Community We aim to promote Responsible Travel by working closely and respectfully with the local community. Support staff are locals and we encourage our guests to take part in local events. We are active in recommending signposted trails and local operators for walking, cycling and other activities. There is plenty of great value locally made produce on offer and we make sure that everyone knows where to go to buy local. We aim to use 100% locally owned and run businesses for all of our external requirements. These include all of our activity suppliers for canoe trips, bike hire, horse riding etc, our hotel and the places that we stop for meals and shopping. We consider it important to observe and interact with the local people, rather than impose ourselves upon them. We like to visit local projects (cave painting restoration, gorge clean-ups, the Ardeche National Park etc) and to offer our support where appropriate. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
