introduction to Loire Valley holidays, tailor made tours

Visit historical chateaux and towns along the royal river; sample the ambiance and produce of local markets; take time to watch the world go by from open air cafés and restaurants. All this comes as standard on our Loire Valley discovery tour.

If you are only in the region for a few days and really want to maximise your time and see as much as you can, without being rushed or herded around - you want flexibility to spend the time you want at each location - then our tours give you that possibility. All tours are escorted - we keep the numbers down so that we can give you the level of service we want to provide - paying attention to the details that will make your break enjoyable from start to finish.

Accommodation is in comfortable en-suite rooms on our former winegrower's property. You won’t be spending lots of time travelling, as we are extremely central –most of the major attractions in the area are within an hour’s drive.

There are the popular attractions of the Loire Valley of course – the must sees – as well as those sights, sounds and tastes that you may not uncover if you are in a large group. We are a family run company and we live here so we can take you to local attractions which will not be on the menu for those on larger coach tours.

See below for an example of our typical 4 day tour.
best time to go
We are lucky in this part of the Loire Valley to be protected to the north and south by forests, which keep away much of the extremes of weather - rain and wind. So the climate is gentle - hot (but not too hot) and sunny in the summer and mild and dry in the winter. The landscape gets its lush green colour from the many rivers that criss-cross the land, and not from lots of rainfall.

Logically speaking, the weather must be good, or the vines wouldn't flourish and produce such great wines! So, whilst we can't guarantee the weather during your holiday, we are confident that you will have an enjoyable time, whenever you visit.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:The tour will begin late afternoon on your arrival day (you can arrive any time after 4.00pm). On arrival we will ensure you are settled into your room, and then we will share with you either afternoon tea or an aperitif whilst we discuss the tour schedule. This evening we will transport you to and from a local restaurant for your evening meal.
Day 2:After a good breakfast - plenty of choice including fresh croissants and bread - you will set off for your first visit of the day. We may start by visiting some world-famous chateaux - Villandry for the magnificent gardens; Rigny Ussé – the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty story; Azay Le Rideau right on the river in the heart of one of the prettiest villages in the area. In the afternoon we move on to Chinon – in or near this fortified medieval chateau town, you can visit the market; sample local goats cheese at the producer's; take a trip to the animated wine museum and the river museum; perhaps enjoy some wine tasting. This evening we will transport you to another local gourmet restaurant, where you can enjoy a choice of mouthwatering menus, along with excellent attentive hospitality and an extensive local wine list.
Day 3:After another hearty breakfast, we leave for Saumur, stopping on the way to sample the sparkling wines that the town is renowned for. After this we may visit the medieval riverside town and chateau. In the afternoon we change pace to visit a troglodyte village and then on to château Brézé – the largest dry moated château in France with an underground secret. On our way home we could visit Montsoreau, a self-guided château visit where you discover how the Loire has been used commercially through the ages. Nearby, there are the caves where many types of mushrooms are produced. A short drive will then find us in Fontevraud, where Richard the Lionheart is buried in a magnificently restored abbey. For your final evening, we will take you to a third gourmet restaurant to enjoy another delicious evening meal.
Day 4:On your last morning, we will serve you a final breakfast before you head off for home or an onward journey.
how this holiday makes a difference
We are a small family run business, which has been operating since 2006 and our principal aim is to provide quality tours in the Loire Valley to meet the needs of our customers.

Environment
Our restored building has a number of features which we have installed which significantly reduce our energy consumption, including the installation of double glazing and insulation throughout which exceeds the French requirements. This often provides the springboard to discuss with guests how we can all conserve energy, particularly in an stone building where you have 60cm thick walls.

Our drainage system is standalone and we have approval to drain the filtered water into the rain water drains as it is classed as “clean”. To ensure the quality of water we do use only bio-friendly detergents and minimise use of these by not changing sheets and towels daily

We recycle plastics, glass, paper, cartons and compost. We insist that our guests to do the same and so provide you with appropriate means to do this.

We use low wattage lights wherever possible, recycle rain water for the garden and are currently researching the use of solar heating both for the production of hot water and also for pool heating.

We recommend travel to us by train, a much more eco-friendly solution over renting cars, or air transport to minimize the Co2 emission by capita. We use locally owned and run businesses for all of our external requirements. These include all our suppliers and the places that we visit during our tours and for meals and shopping.

Community
Our accommodation is here in our property, which we restored and rebuilt with the help of local artisans – using local suppliers and local materials wherever possible, such as the tuffeau stone which is common to this region. We use our own 7 seater transport, which reduces the impact on the environment as groups can travel together in one vehicle.

We have established a friendly network of professionals and contacts including many wine growers who are also firm believers of sustainable development, many of whom now grow grapes organically and are looking at alternative ways to ensure good harvests each year, in preference to pesticides and chemical treatments.

For the meals we serve here – again with local produce depending on the season being prevalent – as we are in the heart of the “Jardin de France” we use local vegetables and fruits wherever possible. We believe that over a meal and/or a drink is also the ideal time to discuss ways in which we can all help prolong the life of the planet which we share.

As well as visiting the ‘headline’ chateaux in the area, we also provide the opportunity to see some of the lesser known sites – often run by individuals with a passion for their local heritage. This greatly enriches your experience (you learn about the ‘real’ locals and their past) as well as helping these important sites economically.

In summary, we believe we are operating an environmentally friendly holiday, with a high level of interaction in the local community, benefiting our economy. Of course, anything can be made better and we are striving to do so – guest who think like us are most welcome.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
