Responsible tourism: East Sussex campsite near Rye, England

We are an environmentally-friendly campsite with recycling facilities. We encourage all campers to record the wildlife they see on the campsite and surrounds in order to keep a good record of the flora and fauna in our area. We grow all our own veg which we sell to campers when we have enough and have irrigated our land so that we conserve rainwater in our own ponds. We have solar panels on our house and run a wood-burning stove in our yurt. We are right outside a bus stop so all our campers can enjoy sustainable transport methods and those travelling to us by means other than car can enjoy their stay at a lower price. Our yurt has been built from local Ash and was built by a family of craftsmen from Rye. Our campsite is a haven for local birdlife and we work hard to maintain their environment in the trees and hedges on our land.

We support local activities and projects in the village in order to maintain traditional country life. Our motto is 'use it or lose it' so we like to encourage our guests to sample all the local pubs, shops and restaurants in the area to ensure that we all benefit from tourism. We have a local information room where all our visitors can map their walks and find inspiration for places to visit, pubs to go to and activities to do. They can also write their own recommendations for other camper sin our guestbook and we have placed two ordinance survey maps on the walls so they can plan their days out. We also have recommendations for restaurants, shops and local artists. We offer local people good working wages for their skills and work to create good relationships between our guests and the community. We have contributed towards local good causes and always encourage our guests to do the same.

From the moment you arrive at the campsite you will be enchanted by the stunning surroundings and truly secluded location in Brede. Down a little lane with a traditional wooden gate at the end- campers can expect a lovely small site from which you can ramble straight out into the neighboring woodland and countryside.

Brede is a stunning village nestled in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just 8 miles north of Hastings and 4 miles west of Rye. The Brede Valley is a stretch of beautiful countryside near Rye, where the Romney and Walland marshland extents westward past Winchelsea, between two steep ridges of the rolling High Weald. The area is wonderfully tranquil and the landscape is rich in history and diverse with wildlife. Throughout the valley is an endless network of pathways and lanes, calling out to be explored by foot.

Close by to the campsite is Brede High Woods a place full of history and some incredible and rare wildlife. It is a beauty spot for photographers and visitors who will leave inspired by the 647 acres of landscape. Brede village is a fantastic place for stargazing, thanks to the villages enlightened view on light pollution (no street lights!) you can appreciate the natural illumination of the night sky. Also within close proximity to Brede is the Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux Castle, a brilliant day out for the whole family. Wine tasting and tours can be found at the family run Carr Taylor Vineyard, just down the road. Plus just ten minutes from the campsite is the Giants of Brede exhibition- a collection of Victorian and Edwardian steam pumping engines. The show is on every 1st Saturday of the month 10-4 and is free.
