Responsible tourism: East Sutherland farmhouse bed & breakfast, Scottish Highlands

We aim to provide you with a great place to stay; at the same time we are committed to working in a sustainable way and to reducing our impact on the environment. With this in mind we joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme in 2011 and are delighted to hold their Gold level grading.

Over the past thirteen years, whilst we have been restoring the house, we have worked to improve its thermal efficiency. We are undertaking micro generating schemes (solar hot water generation, solar photovoltaic and a ground source heat pump installed), we have put in two wood burning stoves for space heating and our lighting has been changed to LED or other low wattage bulbs. Our domestic appliances have an energy rating of A or better.

We re-use or recycle all materials that we can (currently newspaper, card, glass, plastics 1 and 2, cans, printer cartridges and textiles); we compost the majority of our kitchen waste. Over the past thirteen years we estimate that we have reduced our waste to landfill by approximately 60%.

We aim to garden organically, to use companion planting and we have planted our borders with a view to attracting birds and insects. We have feeders to encourage birds and a portion of our garden is left un-strimmed and with wood debris to provide a habitat for insects and small mammals.

We source a large proportion of our food (that which we don't grow, raise or make ourselves) from local suppliers. The oatmeal for your morning porridge is milled in Golspie, we use butchers in Helmsdale and Golspie and we buy our honey from small producers in the area. We also try to use local businesses for non-food supplies, for example a local ceramic artist in Brora has made jam / sugar pots and cream jugs for breakfast time.

Whilst you are with us we hope we can encourage you to take advantage of the many natural attractions in the area, to visit the wonderful tourist attractions, eat in the cafes and restaurants and buy gifts and art in the local shops or from local artists, makers and artisans.

On a personal basis we support Timespan, the local museum and art gallery in Helmsdale, the Helmsdale Woodland Group, the Helmsdale Kitchen Garden group and Golspie High School Parent Council by volunteering.
