Playa del Carmen luxury resort in Mexico

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

“Sustainability will remain core to our business; it must as it is demanded by our guests, our associates, our business partners and we demand it of ourselves.
Resorts in the Third World have both the potential to be agents of social and economic development in less developed areas, or as a source for friction and alienation within the local economy.' Mr. Ho Kwon Ping

At Banyan Tree Mayakoba, we follow a sustainable standard and procedures at all levels and departments. Our sustainability model considers indicators on: environmental, social & cultural, good practices and supply chain.
We own waste management programs that improve the environmental performance, some of them being:
- Resource Conservation - Reduce energy / waste / water sent to landfill. The property has its own water treatment plant.
- Greening Communities – Each year our associates help plant by the least 2,000 trees.
- Cleaning - Remediate and cleanse natural resources or communities. Our target is to conduct at least 4 Community clean-ups per year.
- Guest Sustainability Activities – We offer at least 5 sustainability themed guest activities every year.

The Impacts of this Trip

“In the 20 years since Banyan Tree Phuket first opened, we have been steadfast in abiding by our root values. The values which are now called “Sustainability”, “Corporate Social Responsibility”, and “Corporate Citizenship” remain the foundation values which drive our business spirit.”
Mdm. Claire Chiang

At Banyan Tree Mayakoba, we believe in empowering people and have what we call a “Triple-Bottom-Line”
1. Ongoing economic development
2. Minimize negative environment impacts
3. Achieve positive contributions to society (social)

Committed to our local community, we have established several programs that help its development and its wellbeing:
- Seedlings Mentorships – We empower youths via mentorship & scholarship. Our associates are part of this program with the people selected from our communities. We also set funds to help pay for their education. Our target is to have 3 additional young people into the program every 2 years.
- Protecting Childhood - Banyan Tree Mayakoba has signed the National Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children and Adolescents in the Travel and Tourism Industry (CCN, Código de Conducta). This code of conduct is part of a strategy to eradicate child sexual exploitation and trafficking. 100% of the associates participate in this program with a course and awareness of how to apply the protocol of detection of victims.
- “Voluntariado” - We work with people and for people, we are convinced that together we can achieve the welfare of the population of the area where we are located. Throughout the year we have the opportunity to undertake volunteer work covering different needs of the local population: reforestation, community cleanup, environmental education, species conservation, support to rural schools, vulnerable groups.
