Upper Parsonage Farm is a part of a family farm right in the heart of the Meon Valley surrounded by the chalk hills of the South Downs National Park and just half a mile from the South Downs Way. We have a four star Visit England rating with a gold award. We have several attractions on the doorstep, being the glorious walking, cycling and riding area of Butser Hill and The Queen Elizabeth Country Park - both within half a mile. If history is more of an interest there is Butser Ancient Farm with its round house to view. Consider following the river Meon out to its estuary. It has a tremendous amount of wildlife and local histoy. We even have the source on the farm and it is the highest chalk spring in Hampshire.
For those not wanting to travel too far Petersfield is now a superb market town with so many individual shops and local enterprises. As well as our superb local town the villages of East and West Meon are worth a visit for their historic Churches, local buthchers and award winning Pubs. Midhurst, Petworth and of similar interest retaining their own individuality with so many privately owned shops.
We are within an hour for visits to London or down to the historic Dockyard at Portsmouth. We have Winchester and Chichester locally for visiting the cathedrals or merely having a good shop.
The historic and farming knowledge of our family is very interesting for those happy just to peruse the local valley - we have been farming in Hampshire since the family migrated in 1904
Rooms, food and facilities
Upper Parsonage Farm currently has two double rooms with ensuite bathrooms. One is ground floor and opens onto a courtyard garden - for those wishing to stay longer it is self contained with a small kitchenette. The other room is in the main house it is also a double but has a shower and bath. facility. Both rooms are comfortably furnished with televisions, wifi, complimentary beverage tray and locally produced lavender wash products.
We are able to offer a facility for drying clothes and boots after walking or riding the South Downs Way and we even have a bed for the horses. We can organise shipment of luggage from one establishment to another and can take you to the village for an evening meal. We can recommend ideas for all the numerous tourist attractions locally from fishing in the neighbouring valley, visiting cathedrals to the famous Dockyard at Portsmouth or just enjoying our countryside.
How to find us
Petersfield is our nearest main line link by train where one can take a bus directly to the village of East Meon (No67) from here head out on the Clanfield Road for 1 mile and take a left into Oxenbourne Lane and continue until you find Harvesting Lane and our signs. We are three miles out of the village. There is also a good service to Clanfield by bus and we are 5 miles from there. The house is located half a mile from the South Downs Way and for those using a car Exit A3 at Clanfield, Hambledon and Butser picnic area. Follow signs back towards Petersfield at mini roundabout, past Hampshire Hog Pub on left hand side, take next left into Petersfield Road.
Take next turn right into Hogs Lodge Lane (signed Butser Picnic Area) follow the road to the picnic area. Take the last road on the left before the picnic area with my sign on the gate and the farm is on the left.
PlanetWe live in a National Park and are very conscious that we have been given an enviable job of maintaining our beautiful location to the best of our ability for our future generations - we have managed for over 100 years. We are truly traditional farmers where we respect the birds nesting and do not cut down the hedges until they have nested, we leave the corners of our fields long for our very special bird of the area - the corn bunting. Nature is a true love of the farmer and for this reason Nick has decided to enter a higher level of stewardship. This involves running a strict timescale when cultivating the fields leaving the habitat secure for all wildlife and insects to have completed its life cycle. We also keep the chalk downland without fertilisers and sprays to preserve its natural habitat. Looking at photos from 30 years ago no hedges or major changes have been made. Nick is as keen to keep up old fashioned traditions this is why he annually runs a ploughing match for all to see and we have numerous traditional implements which are regularly put to use on the farm - from threshing drums to crawlers.
We also try to preserve the land from too much in fill. Not only are we avid recylers of our home and garden waste but we now fully support recycling all our farm waste. Strings off bales, plastic wrappers of bales, chemical cans all have there uses.
PeopleWith the family living in the village for the last 100 years, we are very much involved with supporting all the church fetes, the May Fair, coffee mornings for the local Rosemary Foundation and even putting up the Christmas Tree. We are very involved with the day to day aspects and will encourage any visitors to visit or enjoy any of these events. This next year East Meon will be well worth a visit as we are already preparing for a superb 3 day flower festival with lots of poetry reading, music etc to complement the event. This takes place at the end of June check the village web site for details. We have even organised a party for the Diamong Jubilee. There is always a Meon Matters on hand for any local gossip and events within the village. This is part and parcel of our way of life and also keeps the village sustainable. Our recommendations are always to send visitors to all three local pubs - the Thomas Lord and the Bakers Arms have both won Pub of the Year awards recently and then on to Petersfield. We need go no further as all we need is produced and available locally. We have first class butchers who take pride in selling locally produced meat and even some of our lambs. We also have Hyden Farm Organics up the road - what better source for our breakfasts. There is a regular market in Petersfield where most of the other produce is located.
