Description of Sicily cycling holiday, Italy

This Sicily cycling holiday is a week- long, self- guided trip following a tailor- made linear itinerary along the island’s unspoilt west coast. Starting in Scopello and finishing in Marsala, you will not only cycle through some of Europe’s most stunning Mediterranean landscapes but also some of its most rich in terms of ancient history.

This is a moderate level cycling holiday, which won’t push you too much, but travellers who enjoy a bit of regular cycling back home will love this one. Your starting point of Scopello is a mediaeval hamlet, with cobbled streets and wonderful views over the Zingaro Nature Reserve. This protected area is famous for its resident Bonelli's eagles, falcons and buzzards, as well as Instagram-enviable coves. The cycling itinerary then takes you inland to the village of Bruca, which gives easy access to the ancient Greek city of Segesta and is also a wonderfully peaceful spot, enveloped by peaceful Sicilian landscapes. Nubia on the coast is your next stop, where traditional windmills, salt pans and sapphire waters are just three of the typical features of the region you will see from your saddle.

Your final leg on this itinerary, which includes at least three full days of cycling trails, but with quieter days to either explore on foot or with additional cycling, is to Marsala, famous for its eponymous dessert wine. En route we highly recommend exploring the Phoenician island of Mozia.

Accommodation on this cycling holiday is in carefully selected hotels, all with swimming pools to cool down in after a day of cycling (note these sometimes only open May-September), and most in traditional but beautifully-restored baglios, which are typical Sicilian farmhouses

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sicily cycling holiday, Italy

UK Office

We are well aware of the impact tourism has at home and abroad, and we make every effort to balance the environmental impact of travelling with the immense benefits sustainable tourism can bring to destinations and the people who live there.

So we start in the office: we turn off all electrical equipment every night; we use energy-efficient bulbs; we measure print and paper consumption, and re-cycle wherever possible; we print our brochures on paper from sustainable sources, and send them out in bio-degradable packaging.

Leaders & local suppliers

On this 9-day cycling holiday, you spend two nights as guests of Signor Di Vito at his 11-room Baglio Fontana, a converted farmhouse built in traditional Sicilian style around a cobbled central courtyard. The Baglio produces its own wine, olive oil, almonds, citrus and honey – all of which are incorporated into their menus. Its wine producing history is also evident in many of the rooms – for example, the bar has been constructed within the old trough where grapes used to be stored before being crushed by foot! There’s also a small museum displaying ancient tools used in the production process.

Group size

All our cycling holidays are independent, or self-guided, meaning that no minimum numbers are required to ensure that a trip operates. Mostly, trips depart every two days throughout the season, meaning customers are not restricted to busy weekend travel or costly high season dates. It also allows us to offer total flexibility over travel options and holiday durations.

Cycling has minimal impact on the environment as you provide most of the energy yourself and, when you’re pedalling from village to village, you can enjoy a relationship with locals in a way motorists passing through never can. On a bike, you get off the beaten track and people treat you as a visitor rather than a tourist. Also, by cycling independently, and not having to worry about keeping up with a group, you set the pace so you can soak up the sights, sounds and scents of your surrounds and really get under the skin of the place you’re visiting.

We proactively encourages cycling clients to think about travelling responsibly too: packing light, saving water, buying locally and re-cycling all maps and route notes at the end of their trip. We even re-cycle our old bikes! As part of our on-going maintenance, we often need to replace cycle parts which, although still serviceable, don’t meet our standards for reliability and comfort. So we donate these parts to Colchester-based charity, Re-cycle, who go on to send them to parts of Africa where locals are taught how to ride and look after a bike. This service has proven invaluable over the years for doctors, midwives, etc who sometimes need to quickly get to remote villages.
