Austrian Lakes cycling holiday, self guided
Description of Austrian Lakes cycling holiday, self guided
An Austrian lakes cycling holiday, self-guided and gently paced, not only so that you can enjoy the splendid landscapes and shorelines of this country’s sumptuous ‘sees, but also the cultural highlgiths in between. The famous ‘sees’ or include Attersee, Mondsee, Ebensee and Wolfgangsee, with warm thermal springs and spas interspersed along the way, as well as magnificent mountain backdrops. So you can benefit from the mountain beauty without having to pedal up them.
Cycling from one beautiful lakeside hotel to another, accommodation includes a waterfront retreat in Gmunden or a stunning 4 star hotel with pool and thermal steam baths in Bad Ischl.
Starting in Mondsee, and just as with all the lakes, you will follow waterside cycle trails but stop off at plenty of places of interest. This is a tailor made holiday, so we are happy to advise you if you want to extend your routes to include more cycling at any time. Places where you might want to get off your bike, however, include Mozart’s museum in St. Gilgen, some of the innumerable coffee shops on Mondsee’s famously frescoed main street, Emperor Franz Josef's summer residence in Bad Ischl and Gmunden's 'floating' castle, Seeschloss Ort.
On the water, you can take boat trips just about anywhere, but ones that fit in perfectly with our cycling itineraries include a perfect transit across Traunsee and a cruise on Wolfgangsee from Strobl. And if the sound of mountain music is calling, take a cable car ride up to Feuerkogel for that truly awesome alpine experience.
Cycling has minimal impact on the environment as you provide most of the energy yourself. Also, by cycling independently, and not having to worry about keeping up with a group, you set the pace so you can soak up the sights, sounds and scents of your surrounds and really get under the skin of the place you’re visiting.
We proactively encourage our clients to think about travelling responsibly too: packing light, saving water, buying locally, re-cycling all maps and route notes at the end of their trip as well as to be mindful of not leaving any rubbish behind.
We are well aware of the impact tourism has at home and abroad, and we make every effort to balance the environmental impact of travelling with the immense benefits sustainable tourism can bring to destinations and the people who live there. So we start in the office: we turn off all electrical equipment every night; we use energy-efficient bulbs; we measure print and paper consumption, and re-cycle wherever possible; we print our brochures on paper from sustainable sources, and send them out in bio-degradable packaging.
PeopleWhen you’re cycling from village to village, you can enjoy a relationship with locals in a way motorists passing through never can. You get off the beaten track, supporting local economies who might not usually benefit from tourism and you’ll find that people treat you as a visitor rather than a tourist.
Our suggested cycling route takes you via St Wolfgang where we encourage you to stop off and visit its renowned 15th century church. Entry is free between services, however we do encourage guests to make a small donation. Built in honour of St John the Baptist, the story of St Wolfgang is part of local folklore and is firmly entwined in the town’s history and culture. We send you the full story before you travel!
We have included five evening meals on the holiday, leaving you free to choose from Mondsee's and Bad Ischl's local restaurants.
With all our holidays, we encourage visitors to buy from independently-run shops & establishments where possible, supporting the local people and their families.
