Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Highlights of Burma tour

To travel responsibly means to promote the sustainable development of destinations by minimising negative impacts and maximising positive ones for both the environments that we travel to and the people living within them. For our Burma tours we have partnered with a local organisation who have been operating in Burma for over 20 years and have a foundation in responsible and ethical travel. Not only do they have their own foundation that help to support local organisations, NGO’s an social enterprises, both through financial aid and advice, they are also Travelife certified, an international award recognised by the Global Sustainability Council and one of the most comprehensive certification scheme for organisations within the tourism industry.

As well as auditing existing practices, Travelife give guidance and help to support future developments ensuring that all progress is towards a sustainable goal. So clients can rest assured that our trips operate to the highest of sustainability standards, ensuring that the money they spend goes directly into the local community and helps with the development of growth and protection of both the cultural and environmental heritage of the destination.

On arrival into Burma all our clients are provided with refillable water bottles to use throughout the whole tour. When travelling in a destination such as Burma where the tap water is unsafe to drink, this can lead people to consume water from small plastic bottles, easily and very inexpensively obtained. However, this consumption of uncountable amounts of water bottles is one of the factors that has led to a global pandemic of plastic waste and pollution, both on land in in our oceans, especially in Asia where recycling facilities are few in number. This is one of the reasons why we have partnered with local organisations thought the tour to provide refill stations to try to limit the impact that our guests have when visiting this astonishing destination. The notion of ‘take only pictures, leave only footprints’ has been around in the tourism industry for many years, and one that should be in the forefront of anyone’s mind when travelling to any destination.

We aim to have a positive impact on the destinations that we travel to and include socially responsible and cultural immersion experiences in all of our tours. On our this tour we take clients to experience probably one of the most iconic images of the country - Mandalay’s tea shops to enjoy a cup of tea and soak in the atmosphere. We visit local day and night markets away from the tourists and are immersed within communities in Bagan taking in local tea houses, visit artisan workshops and take a closer look at Bagan’s spiritual side with a visit to the Hngat Pyit Taung Monastery. Here you will have the opportunity to meet with monks to learn about monastic life and explore the temple’s caves to better understand the spiritual beliefs of the Burmese.

In the final destination, Burma’s former capital of Yangon, we will board the lively circular train for a colourful ride through Yangon’s neighbourhoods, stopping off for walking tours through the local communities seeing an alternative side of the city rarely visited by tourists. We support the families of the businesses and organisations that we visit through a direct donation to them and also give opportunity for our clients to purchase some locally made, responsible produce as well to help supplement the families’ income.

We feel that arranging tours to Southeast Asia, we inevitably have a substantial impact on the destinations that we visit. While we always try to ensure this is a positive one on the local culture, communities and environment by only working with suppliers that are carefully selected to have a responsible ethos, much the same as our own, we also feel that much more can be done to help the development and welfare of the local people in our destinations. This is why we choose to support a number of charities in Asia, including ‘Child’s Dream’, an organisation focused on the education and well-being of children of Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. We raise money directly through a range of in-house events and also give full information of the charity, and ways to support them, to our clients to raise awareness and encourage people to help further support this incredible organisation as well.
