Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Activity & Environment:
Few holidays have as little detrimental impact on the environment and local residents as a trip like this. We are very conscious of our effects on the environment and how we can reduce negative impact and aid conservation, therefore where possible we use low impact methods of transport such as taking the train and walking, this allows clients to take in the scenic views of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by sustainable means. During this trip we also supply drinking water and therefore encourage guests to pack a reusable bottle which can be refilled, this also reduces our dependency on single-use plastics.

A Fair Deal:
Our local partner in Peru is extremely committed to staff welfare and to protecting the environment. All staff are paid a fair wage and receive proper treatment by their employers in exchange for their incredibly valuable local expertise. They are also encouraged to put environmental protection practices into use in their own communities - regular training courses are held for all staff to increase their understanding of how to protect their natural and cultural heritage. This should filter through to clients in briefings, which help to minimise detrimental effects on the people and environments we visit. All leaders receive 2 hours training on Responsible tourism and it’s a mandatory core module to be taken every 2 years. This module covers a section of protecting the Rights of Women, Children and Minorites and the 5 freedoms of Animal Welfare. During the first group meeting the clients will receive a 5-10 minute talk about responsible travel, where the leader refers to this training. There is also an additional document available for leaders called ‘Animal Welfare Guidelines’, and during the trip itself leaders constantly refer to opportunities for practicing responsible tourism.

UK office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

Accommodation and meals:
We spend 6 nights in hotels in Lima, Cuzco and Aguas Calientes. We prefer to use small businesses for our accommodation, activities and services as these are the companies which have most direct benefit to the communities which we visit. Where meals are not supplied, guides will be able to recommend local cafes, restaurants and markets to get a bite. Local specialties to look out for include ceviche (a spicy dish of fish marinated in lime juice), lomo saltado (a Peruvian take on a stir fry) and hearty soups.

Local Craft & Culture:
In Cuzco and Aguas Calientes there are opportunities to visit the markets and purchase local handicraft products or to sample Peruvian street food; try the Mercado San Pedro in Cuzco for local produce, and the artesan market in Aguas Calientes for textiles. This helps to spread the income from tourism to the wider community, ensuring we are giving back to the places we visit through this trip. Although Machu Picchu is the highlight, Cuzco itself is awash with magnificent Spanish churches and Inca Museums - your entrance fees to these historic and archaeological treasures contribute towards their preservation.

Group size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 16 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in a unique, family-run hotel that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to its limited size.
