Description of Cycling holiday in Mallorca, Spain

This cycling holiday in Mallorca slowly makes its way through this diverse Balearic Island, taking in everything from hilltop monasteries to citrus plantations, to ancient stone towns and hidden coves, with plenty of time in between for quiet swims, leisurely lunches, and the odd winery tour.

Starting in the south, in the quaint town of Algaida, you’ll cycle out to pretty Campos and the sandy beaches of Es Tren for a swim and a rest, before a thigh busting climb to the sanctuary of Saint Salvador. Over the next few days you’ll also follow the backroads to the hilltop town of Sineu, with its impressive church, climb into the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains to the hillside town of Orient, explore the underground caves of Campanet, and cycle along coastal bike paths to Port de Pollenca.

While the tour moves at gentle pace, there are three steep uphill climbs of around 5km each, but the views and buildings at the top make it worth the effort. There’s always the option of catching a ride in the support vehicle if it all gets a bit too much.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Cycling holiday in Mallorca, Spain

Activity:
Few holidays have as little detrimental impact on the environment and local residents as a cycling trip. We believe in leaving no more than footprints (or tyre tracks!) although this tour actively encourages guests to talk to local people, visit local cafes and restaurants, use markets to purchase traditional gifts and crafts and get a real impression of island life on Mallorca. On this trip we have the chance to explore white sand beaches like Es Trenc, hill top monistaries such as Llucmajor and the sanctuary or San Salvador as well as other attractions like the Coves of Campante. All of these sights rely soley on tourism to generate the income needed to keep these attractions open.

Accommodation & Meals:
We spend the week in a variety of small, family run hotels in the villages we visit. By spreading our commerce to several different local businesses, we are providing more financial benefit to the local community. Food is a massive part of Spanish culture and so where meals are provided (all breakfasts), our local staff are enthusiastic about showcasing fresh produce from the area. Your guides can make sure you’re acquainted with local restaurants and cafes, which is a great chance to both support the community and to get an authentic experience

Water:
Water is a really important issue with cycling trips and whilst we must stay hydrated, it is also vital that we have a system for providing clean water without causing lots of waste with plastic bottles. We suggest that instead of repeatedly buying bottled water, guests should re-fill a singular bottle. Our guides can advise where to fill them and where to recycle litter.

Waste and consumables
This is an active trip that requires plenty of food and consumable items to keep our groups moving. Most of the main meals are eaten at restaurants or cafes that have their own waste control measures in place already, however for our picnic meals which are eaten out, we aim to keep waste to a minimum. This is done by having our guides shop at local markets for fruit, bread and veg rather than in supermarkets which helps to reduce the amount of packaging used. Mallorca has very good recycling facilities in place, large recycling and general waste bins can be found at the roadside allowing us to easily dispose of rubbish and recycling throughout the tour.

Charity:
We support a local charity called RAIS Fundacion, which works with homeless people in Spain to provide housing and training opportunities. Annually, we arrange activities every year with RAIS so that groups working with the charity can experience cycling and walking day trips with us.

A Fair Deal
We work closely with our local operator and ensure that all of our guides are local and that in exchange for their expertise that they are paid and treated fairly. The leaders will give a briefing on responsible tourism issues to help you understand how you can help reduce your impact and maximise the benefits to the local community from your visit. We also use transfers and hire a bike locally, which has a positive effect on the community.

UK Office & Group Size
This is a small group tour with a group size between 4 and 16 people, by having smaller group sizes we can stay in smaller family run hotels in rural towns and avoid using large chain hotels. This allows us to see parts of the country or destination that would not normally be visited by tour groups.
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK Offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.
