Description of South Georgia cruise with Chris Packham

A remote and pristine wilderness east of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia sees few visitors, leaving its inhabitants in peace. Among them: over six million King penguins, and frankly staggering numbers of elephant seals as well as very healthy populations of terns, Skuas and Gentoos. For aspiring wildlife photographers, a small ship cruise to South George presents unparalleled opportunities, and one led by naturalist Chris Packham and the award-winning photographer Paul Goldstein, doubly so.

Over the course of two weeks in November 2020, and departing from Port Stanley, you’ll sail aboard an expedition vessel, making landing after landing on the beaches of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands in search of sublime photographic opportunities. You may capture dueling elephant seals, sea lions dancing with killer whales in the waves, immense and cacophonous Rockhopper penguin rookeries, albatrosses and petrels soaring and diving in the boat’s crest, and all of it set against a dramatic backdrop of hanging glaciers and untouched beaches.

On the beaches of South Georgia, the dusk and dawn hours are magical, promising unlimited potential for wildlife encounters you’ll treasure. This is nature at its most savagely beautiful, its most raw, and what a canvas you’ll discover. Whatever your level of photography experience, as long as you know your way around your camera you’ll gain immensely from this trip.

You’ll pick up expert photography tips from the enthusiastic and vivacious Paul Goldstein, and of course Chris Packham’s passion for conservation and boundless energy for campaigning will make him an absolutely fascinating cruise companion.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

UK office
It all starts at home so we have first worked to reduce our carbon footprint in our UK offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies in place, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

Leaders & local suppliers
We take extremely seriously our responsibility to minimise our impact on these pristine areas.
We are an Associate Member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and have agreed to abide by one of the tourism world's most conscientious codes of conduct. Two of our ship operators are also members of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), which covers operations in Spitsbergen.

RT Project
Penguin Lifelines
As part of our commitment to conservation and responsible travel, we have teamed up with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to support Penguin Lifelines, a conservation project designed to research the impact of climate change on Antarctic penguins and understand their population structure and migration patterns.

Antarctic penguin populations are facing serious threats from both climate change and fisheries. In order to make educated conservation decisions, accurate biological data is needed, and therefore we are helping provide the ZSL with access to valuable data through both 'DNA feather printing' and colony counting from photographic records.

Polar Bear Study
The Polar bear’s migratory patterns have long been a mystery to conservationists. With money raised from expeditions and donations, we have made valuable contributions to the purchase of the expensive tracking collars – critical in monitoring their hunting and mating patterns.

Albatross Campaign
Almost half a million US dollars has been raised through staff and passengers towards the ‘Get the Albatross off the Hook’ campaign, aimed at stopping the butchery of albatrosses by long-line fishing.

Scott Polar Research Institute
Finally we support the work of the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge, which is the oldest international centre for Polar Research within a university.
