Description of Cape Verde walking holiday

This small group walking holiday encapsulates the verdant volcanic landscapes along the northern coastline of Santo Antão, the westernmost island in the Cape Verde archipelago. Either side of your five night stay on Santo Antão you’ll explore the neighbouring island of Sao Vincente, including a tour of Mindelo and a bus ride to the island’s highest point, Monte Verde.

Throughout this walking holiday every effort has been made to ensure travellers and islanders have a positive experience and benefit from each other’s presence. This is why we stay in locally owned accommodation that employs people from the surrounding area and uses locally grown produce in meals, wherever possible.

Walking also lessens any environmental impact that our small groups have on the islands of Cape Verde and there’s nothing better for the soul than exploring outdoors in the company of a local guide, surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery and wild Atlantic white sand beaches.

Small group tours:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modeled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. Those with a two-week holiday, a small group tour will save valuable planning time.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Trekking and walking trips as such have very little detrimental impact on the environment and local residents. It is a quiet, low impact activity requiring comparatively little resources to support. Erosion on and adjacent to popular paths is a growing problem and our trip leaders encourage clients not to stray from paths to minimise this. We work with a strict ‘leave no trace’ policy, meaning we have respect for wildlife and the landscape, separate rubbish and take all burnable waste back to a proper disposal place.

Group Size:
This is a small group tour, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, family-run hotels that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.

UK Office:
It all starts at home where we work towards reducing our carbon footprint in our offices through energy conservation measures, recycling policies and the promotion of cycling and walking as a means for our staff to commute. Our head office has become a plastic-free zone with the use of plastic bottles being banned in our head office and we distributed reusable water bottles and tote bags to every staff member. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

Accommodation and Meals:
On this trip, we will spend most nights in hotels and 3 nights in family-run guest houses. All the accommodation employs local staff and uses local produce for meals wherever possible. This ensures that our money spend contributes to the local community. When meals are not provided, our local guide will encourage and recommend clients to visit local restaurants and cafes to try local specialties. Cachupa Rica is Cape Verde’s national dish, a stew made with corn, beans, fish or meat and vegetables and usually served with rice. Essentially, Cape Verdean cuisine is a fusion of South American and African ingredients influenced by the Portuguese history hence; there will be a variety of stews, soups, pizza and pasta.

Local craft and culture:
We start off the trip with a city tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cidade Velha where the first settlement from the Portuguese was established being the first European colonial settlement in the tropics. On the mountainous island of Santo Antao, we will hike through the fertile valley of Ribeira Grande to get an insight of the local life at the riverside. We also get to visit a local farmer’s project in Lagedos that displays products throughout the region such as goat cheese, seasonal vegetables, juices, liquors, jams and meats. This is a good chance for clients to support local produce by trying some fresh juice and delicacies. We will head to the port city of Mindelo, the secret cultural capital of the country. Over there, we will visit a local manufacturer to learn how guitars are made and listen to some local artists as well as a musical performance from the masters.
