Description of Morocco small group holiday, beach & gorges

Morocco is steeped in iconic landmarks such as the kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou and the Hassan Tower of Rabat, and breathtaking natural scenery including the vast Todra Gorge and the Sahara Desert stretching out endlessly under the baking sun. This tour will captivate you from start to finish.

A whistle-stop itinerary will see you travelling between Marrakech, Casablanca, Chefchaouen and medieval Fes, all of them must-see destinations in Morocco. There will be fascinating guided tours around maze-like medinas, ancient Roman ruins and the world’s largest film studio; engaging cultural encounters, and opportunities to form lasting bonds with your fellow travellers.

Wander the cobbled streets of Chefchaouen’s old town, lined with sky-blue houses and leather workshops. Ride on camelback over the Saharan dunes to a traditional Berber camp where you will feast and sleep beneath a canopy of stars. Relax with a mint tea on a terrace in Essaouira, basking in the ambience of this laidback coastal community.

While the pace of the tour rarely lets up, there is plenty of free time built in too. So you can explore each destination at your own pace, or take part in optional activities. Perhaps rock climbing in the dramatic Todra Gorge; surf lessons off Essaouira’s crescent beach; a steam and massage in a Marrakech hammam, or browsing the stalls in the small but vibrant medina of Chefchaouen.

Every day of this Morocco trip brings new sights, knowledge and experiences. The variety of landscapes, culture and cuisine is astonishing. You can expect to be as charmed as the snakes of the Marrakech medina.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

Waste
All our travellers are sent detailed pre-departure information upon booking their trip. This includes information on travelling responsibly and minimising their impact on the local environment. A section is devoted to minimising waste whilst travelling. Travellers are encouraged to remove unnecessary packaging from items before leaving home (recycling facilities are often more accessible in home countries) and to use either rechargeable batteries , wind-up or solar-powered electrical items-such as torches, cameras and mobile phones.
At the start of your trip your Tour Leader will aso remind the group of the importance of disposing of waste appropriately.

Suppliers
Our local Moroccan operator is a key player in the Ait Ouhem Association for Development, a local, community-led organisation in the Atlas Mountains. For every Moroccan tour booked we donate £5 per passenger to help the Association achieve its goals which includes reforestation in the mountains around the village to try and limit further soil erosion.

Community

Volunteering and Charity
We are proud to be working with the Ait Ouhem Association for Development, a local, community-led organisation in the Atlas Mountains. For every Moroccan tour booked we donate £5 per passenger to help the Association achieve its goals of:

1. Building a dispensary in the village to provide people with at least emergency first aid medical supplies. (The nearest hospital is 70 km away).

2. To provide houses with tap water.

3. Encouraging students of the village to continue their studies through buying necessary materials such as bags, books, books, pens.

4. To plant different trees in the mountains all around the village to stop or at least limit erosion.

5. Creating a textile cooperative for women so that they can earn a living that is otherwise not available to them.

Friends and Neighbours
We are very keen generally, that the income from our trips is dispersed as widely as possible within the local community and goes to small local service providers and not multi-nationals. All the accommodation and restaurants we use on our trip are small locally-run establishments and all our guides are local Moroccans.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There was a lot, Chefchaouen and Essacouria were a delight. I enjoyed the 'chat' that formed part of any bargaining exchange and learning about the history/traditions of Morocco and the Berber people from the locals and the guide, Younes. I found the Moroccan people to be very warm, kind, friendly and generous and had a real sense of pride in their culture and country, a pleasure to be around.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Read about the history of Morocco before going as it would enhance your experience. Also, understand the importance of their religion to them and respect the dress code it requires, flash your shoulders and knees elsewhere.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, investing money locally by buying in the local markets in the smaller towns helped as well as staying in smaller traditional hotels. Using a mini bus to travel in rather than 4x4s means less vehicles on the road.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, it far exceeded my expectations. It was so good that by day 6 I felt I had been on holidays for weeks and that I had experienced and learned a mountain of things, my brain was saturated.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I enjoyed the free time in Essaouira at the end of the tour because it was rather fast paced and we would on average spend only one night in one single city. Since our group travelled around the holidays, I also really enjoyed the New Year's Eve party organised by the Moroccans in one of the hotels where we got to spend that night - there was a lot of dancing and live music, certainly a very memorable way to spend the New Year's Eve.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Do not bring a lot of things with you, just a few t-shirts and light trousers and jeans would do (there are laundry services available in the cities and the guide can help you to arrange for that), and be ready for quite a bit of time spent in the van getting from one location to another. Finally, be ready to socialise and make friends on the trip!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think so, because we stayed in locally owned hotels and gave quite a few tips to local tour guides and hotel staff. We also shopped in cooperatives for argan oil and other Moroccan products. I am not sure about environmental impact as it was quite a lot of driving around.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a very well organised tour that I would certainly recommend to anyone who is interested in discovering Morocco and has two weeks to spare doing exactly that :)

The cameltrip into the sahara

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

let yourself go on the flow

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

not really

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

superb.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you very much for your review Marij and we are delighted to read that you would rate your trip as 'Superb' overall. Your advice for other travellers was also spot-on. Allowing yourself to go with the flow of the country, culture and trip allows you to get the most out of your travel.

We were however concerned to read that you did not 'really' feel that your trip ''benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation.'' In terms of benefitting local people and supporting conservation we are proud to be working with the Ait Ouhem Association for Development, a local, community-led organisation in the Atlas Mountains. For every Moroccan tour booked we donate £5 per passenger to help the Association achieve its goals of: 1.

Our trips are also run by local Tour Leaders; we stay in small locally run hotels (not big international chains) and we eat in small locally run restaurants. All of these factors help to create local employment and bring money directly into the local economy-not to big multi-nationals. Certain activities such as the camel trek -one of your most memorable parts of the trip-help to support people living a more traditional way of life, who often find it difficult to earn a regular income.

It is maybe difficult during your trip to appreciate the economic importance of your presence. We hope this impact will continue by you recommending Morocco to others as a travel destination.

Thank you again for taking the time to complete this review and we hope that you might choose to travel with us again in the future.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Blue and white Chefchaouen, berber villages, camel trek, tanneries in Fes, Volubilis and a lot of couscous and tajines.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It is a lot of travelling. So if you are looking for a very relaxing or private holiday, this is not the one. But if you are looking for a great trip with a lot to see and experience, learn and eat, go for it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We used local hotels, local guides and local restaurants. But we could do more in cleaning Morocco from all plastic bags.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was very good. Nice group, great tour leader and excellent itinerary.
