Description of Tibet trekking holiday, Lhasa to Kashgar

This three-week journey from Lhasa to Kashgar is full of high points, and we’re not talking solely about the altitude.

After a few days spent at the roof of the world exploring iconic landmarks such as the Potala Palace and the Drepung Monastery, as well as joining the Barkhor pilgrim circuit around the Jokhang Temple, you’ll move on to the fortress town of Gyantse, and to see the majestic Tashilhunpo Monastery of Shigatse.

From Shigatse it’s on along the Friendship Highway as far as Rongbuk, and the two-hour each way trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. Even when you know what to expect, the north face of the world’s highest mountain is still a breathtaking spectacle.

Short scenic walks along valleys and lake shores follow, before what many will surely feel is the jewel in the crown of this itinerary. Arriving in Darchen, you will be undertaking the three-day kora around Mount Kailash. The mountain is revered by Buddhists, Hindus and Jains alike, and the trek, though arduous at times, is an incredible experience not to be soon forgotten.

On completing the Mt. Kailash pilgrim circuit, you’ll relax for a day for a day at the Tsadapuri hot springs, then move into the more wild and barren terrain of Western Tibet. You'll drive past salt lakes, remote villages and towering peaks as you make for the ancient city of Kashgar. Home to China’s oldest mosque, as well as a very famous bazaar, it’s a fitting end-point for this adventurous trip.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Responsible travel and sustainable tourism are fundamental ideas that we have been committed to since our birth. It is our strong belief that these words should not be simply ‘tagged on’ to dossiers and websites but should be at the very core of each trip, and our adventures are therefore designed with the local people, culture and eco-system in mind. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our clients, but that it also benefits the peoples whose lands we are privileged to visit.

Many nights on this trip are spent camping, four nights alone are spent on Mount Kailash. We have a strict environmental policy to make sure that the fragile eco-system of the mountains is not damaged or spoilt in any way. Our guides have been trained to uphold this policy and all clients are fully briefed on appropriate/responsible behaviour whilst in wilderness areas. Our “Leave No Trace” ethic is applied to all trips in all regions, and as tour operators is something we are careful to promote. We try to leave camp sites tidier than they were before we arrived.

People

On this trip to China and Tibet we use local ground handlers who in turn book locally run hotels, providing employment for a number of members of staff and support families. The ground handlers also use local drivers and local guides at the sites, meaning that all the operational costs go directly into the local economy.

In order to facilitate an enduring support structure for the communities we visit, and to show a commitment to these values, we have set up a charitable foundation through which we can channel funds to both existing NGOs and our own development projects. In addition to organising ethically sensitive Indian cultural tours, having our own charitable foundation allows us to raise money – through the cost of our tours, charity trips and fund raising events – which can then be used to fund various projects in education, sanitation, reforestations and a number of other important issues facing developing communities. Wherever possible we are happy for our clients to visit these projects to see for themselves where and how this money is being spent.
