Description of Sweden family holiday, Ecolodge short break

This is an ideal short break for families looking to get back to nature in the forests of central Sweden. Staying in an ecolodge (capacity 24 guests) you’ll be encouraged and assisted to gather your own wood for the fire so as to cook outdoors amongst the pines. Don’t expect all mod cons as accommodation is basic, yet cosy, with an emphasis on the environment rather than electrical cables and hot showers.

Getting out of reach of the modern world is what drives families to have the most fantastic time with opportunities to meet other like-minded kids and parents providing an authentic wild camping vibe and plenty of time and space for everyone to find their feet and make new friends in the forest.

Your knowledgeable campsite host will give you all the instructions you need to have the safest and most enjoyable four days imaginable. Canadian canoes are suitable for a family of four and offer the most efficient means of exploring as well as a good chance to reflect, in every sense. Beaver and moose tracking is always a firm favourite with families although wild swimming and a floating sauna often run a close second.

Skilled wildlife guides are on hand to help you discover the animals living within Sweden’s pine forest in the most responsible way possible. You’ll learn as you explore as well as finding out the joys of foraging for mushrooms and wild berries – walking trips have never been so much fun or so interesting.

Fishing, bird watching and marshmallows over an open fire make this an opportunity to take things at your own pace whilst visits to the on-site organic grocery shed conjure up everything your family needs for lunchtimes and evening meals without a kitchen in sight. All cooking equipment is provided and there's a nearby stream suitable for washing up, whilst all waste is recycled and diligently managed by campers and host.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism: Sweden family holiday, Ecolodge short break

Environment

Back to nature! Kolarbyn Ecolodge is the ultimate environmental friendly accommodation. Candles and camp fires instead of electricity, a clear water lake with a sauna instead of showers, outdoor compost toilets, and a life in pure nature!

We have now worked for more than 10 years to take people from all over the World to see some of Sweden’s most remarkable wild animals such as Moose, Wolves, Beavers, Bears and spectacular birds like Owls and Capercaillies. Our aim is to offer genuine nature experiences that support wildlife conservation and creates economic opportunities for the local society. We are so proud to say that our tours are often used as a good example by others to prove that wild animals can be a substantial income for rural areas, and that these animals are worth more alive than dead.

We are an awarded ecotourism company, we won the Grand Travel Award for best ecotourism in Sweden 2009, and we are approved with the Swedish quality label for ecotourism, Natures Best since 2004.

We have applied a strict policy to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. Our boats are run on electric engines and the batteries are recharged on hydro-power. We also minimise driving and use carbon offset carbon emissions for our vehicles.

Community

We work with local guides only. That is why we can take you to the very best places to see wildlife up close in areas of Sweden where most other visitors never go. To make your holiday complete, we cooperate with small, family run guesthouses in rural villages with friendly and engaged staff. This create local job opportunities in rural areas and also provides you with a much more authentic experience. All of our guesthouses have cosy and friendly atmosphere. The food is locally produced and the dishes are mainly from the area, often with sustainable wild hunted meat like wild boar and moose along with wild chantarelles and sweetened lingonberries. Blueberries can be picked in the forest along the walks and we often bring hot drinks out into the wild.

Our guides like to explain the ecosystem and the interaction between humans and wildlife. There are many conflicts that needs to be solved, and it is important to understand the details to get a bigger picture. We hope that each one of our guests returns home with more knowledge and greater respect for our wild animals.

Group size:
We operate small group tours where one guide work with a maximum of eight participants, simply because you get a better experience nature in a smaller group.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sauna on the lake at 6.30am - definitely a great way to start the day!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Expect the basics and you wont be disappointed - it's a wonderful experience

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The nature of the site and operation has very low impact on the environment and the 2 tours included in our package were definitely supporting the local community and conservation: food was locally sourced from B&B owners and farmers on both trips.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent mini break - already making plans to return

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The wolves!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The Ecolodges are great, everything is provided (although a torch is helpful), and the experience is relaxing. The wildlife trips are very well lead, informative,
fun, and you do get to see the animals in their natural habitat - they don't use food to attract them. Main tip: include the wolf trip in your holiday!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the guides were local, as were the staff at the Kolarbyn. The project also works with charcoal producers, maintaining skills and knowledge.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was excellent, could not fault it. The three of us (two in our fifties, one early twenties) had a great time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Camping in Kolarbyn eco lodges and swimming in the lake

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring a few treats and bacon or any other meat/ fish or chicken you like as the hotel can’t store these items and chocolate and alcohol

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think it kept the huts in use and the site of the ancient charcoal area, being used for a purpose. Also benefitted the local economy of Skinnekatteberg which is quite remote.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Amazing and relaxing. Thank you to Simon and Ewan for 2 amazing tours: beaver and moose. We saw a lot of wildlife and 3 beavers and 11 moose including 3 large males. The information and food was wonderful and it was a very beautiful experience in the forests and lakes. The children loved it. We also stayed at Kolarbyn eco lodge ( thanks to Gina too) and camped there for 3 nights, the sauna and lake swims and Canadian canoeing were fabulous. Highly recommended! Especially for kids, ours are 11 and 15. Being off grid is very relaxing and simple tasks like getting water from the spring, are lovely.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming in the lake then warming up in the floating sauna

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Relax and go with the flow. Food is basic so bring along treats as long as they don't require refrigeration

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - environmentally friendly lodges with recycling. Promoted the local wildlife conservation

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - difficult to find a holiday that all my 4 kids (aged 17 to 7) would enjoy - but this one really worked for us. Great to get away from mod cons and enjoy a simpler life for a few days

Read the operator's response here:

Wow, thank you for your positive review! I am glad to see that you are so happy with your adventure in Sweden. W greetings from the moose, the beavers, the wolves and us. Stay wild!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beautiful location staying in the forest next to a stunning lake with simple but cosy accommodation.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It is a holiday for those who enjoy the simpler things of life and the beauty of nature so make sure you have the right clothing.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The accomodation was very low impact. The wild Sweden beaver and moose watching trips were fantastic. We learnt a lot about both animals and their habitat. The trip brought people to a remote area and employed local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our family thought it was a brilliant holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The outdoor feeling, back to the essence of being outside and adjusting to the rhythm of
nature.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Prepare yourself for the basics, bring rain gear and read/ practise a bit with building
fires. We came to the rescue of a fellow guest just in time to avoid a major flame
burst.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely, owner, guides all were from the direct neighbourhood, the electrical
motors for the beaver tour where silent and the zodiacs where supercool! The moose
guide relied a bit much on the predictability of moose behaviour. Perhaps the tact
that he has to drive and watch out makes the spotting more complicated. The fact that
we had many youthful eyes in our car helped us spotting 10 moose and 4 red babies!
Which was absolutely fantastic for a predicted amount of 5/6.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a fantastic time with our family of 4. Our teenage children did not miss their
WiFi one moment, busy with making fire, canoeing, cutting wooden sticks (bring a pocket
knife!), chopping wood even doing the dishes was fun. It is defenitely primitive, if you
have never camped you might stretch yourself but what a fantastic environment to do so!

Up there with the best. I was worried about all the changes with public transport
but everything went very smoothly
