Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Family multi activity holiday in Norway

This trip is led by a lady who lives and breathes nature and wildlife in her unspoilt corner of Norway. Gunn Anita is truly passionate about looking after the landscapes in which she lives and works. She is a local hero when it comes to sharing this with others - both visitors and neighbours alike. Gunn's work for Lierne National Park backs up her passion and dedication to the environment and local wildlife having led projects to help wildlife and to encourage others to learn more. She pioneered a program called 'Living with Predators' which helps people, especially children, to understand how to live around bears and other animals and ultimately to help protect them. She believes that nature-based tourism is not only beneficial to the environment but also to people as well who can learn at any stage of their life. All of Gunn's guided adventures ensure that wildlife continues to prosper. Gunn uses tracks that do not interfere with the animals or wildlife and instead helps people to learn about bear signs and how to live around predators.

Your host also runs a small farmstead where the cabins are located. This accommodation is certified by the national organisation for eco-tourism which covers many areas of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Waste from the accommodation is kept to a minimum and indeed there is an extensive recycling programme. In addition to this, there are various measures in place to conserve energy. Food miles are kept to a minimum, notably as Gunn grows her own vegetables and fruit and, of course, forages for wild food in the nearby forests and mountains. This not only tastes better, but ensures minimum food miles.

Gunn Anita works tirelessly to promote her local area and has a strong network of local suppliers – for food supplies, activities and other supplies. All of her guests are encouraged to use local suppliers and to visit handicrafts people wherever possible. She is part of a network called Wild Norway which encourages nature-based sustainable tourism, meaning that small local providers can work together to achieve fantastic quality products for their guests.

Through her work with the national park, Gunn Anita has brought about significant local change and has enabled guests of all ages to understand and learn about local issues and wildlife. The ultimate aim is to preserve the natural landscapes and to support local communities and help them to thrive.

Guests are also encouraged to arrive using public transport and indeed this programme includes train transfers to cut down on car transportation. Gunn Anita provides guests with information about transportation and local buses to help them come without the car.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There are so many memorable experiences from our time staying with Gunnanita. All of the activities she arranged were interesting, well organised and wonderful for the whole family. We loved learning about bears, the Norwegian(rural) way of living, the food, the wildlife, the Sami's and how all parts co-exist in this part of the world. Our girls particularly loved the horse riding and taking the horses swimming "bare back". Gunnanita's hospitality and attention to detail was outstanding and well exceeded any expectations we had. We were really off the beaten track and by staying with a local in an area where very few tourists visit we felt welcomed but the whole community. Gunnanita enlisted other tour guides like Jergen to take us on some of our adventures. Jergen hosted an amazing afternoon and evening of repelling, rock climbing and caving followed by a magnificent dinner of perfectly cooked Reindeer steaks with lingonberry jelly, poached pear, potatoes, carrots and parsnips all prepared over an open fire in a stunning setting on private property by the river that we later canoed down to see the Beavers.

Gunnanita is also a fantastic cook. We ate Moose 4 different ways (Moose is a staple in the local diet!), Trout that my husband and son caught with Gunnanita in the lake (This adventure catching 8 Trout was a particular highlight for them!), along with a variety of local delicacies including home grown and made strawberry jam, cloudberry cream, eggs from her hens, potatoes from her farm, chanterelle mushrooms she collected for the forest, and Chaga Tea collected from the vary rare and hard to find Chaga mushroom.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Staying with Gunnanita is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the Norwegian culture and learn about the local environment, people and wildlife. The holiday she has put together has a great mix of activity, education and relaxation. It provides a fantastic opportunity to bring people to a part of Norway that is not on the tourist route and consequently the experience is very authentic. Every member of our family of 5 loved it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we felt many people in the community benefited by our stay. Gunnanita shared us around! We ate at a local Guesthouse one evening and a local cafe for lunch one day. She also used other tour guides for some of the acivities and is was clear that they were excited to have the opportunity share with us. We also learnt more about co-existing with our local habitat and not wasting anything.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
