Description of Singing holiday in Italy

Base yourself in a beautiful country hotel for this week-long singing holiday in Italy and your voice and your spirit will feel the benefits in more ways than you can ever hope to imagine.

Emilia-Romagna provides the backdrop to your stay with two courses, on separate dates, featuring the inspirational conducting talents of Neil Ferris (Sacred Choral Course) and the expert vocal tuition of Mary King (Secular Choral Course).

Both courses come to a thrilling finale as you take part in a public concert to highlight what you’ve learned over the course of your time away. Aside from tuition this holiday is designed to be just that, a holiday, and you can expect to socialise, relax and have fun alongside an eclectic and fun musical itinerary.

The highlights of this singing holiday in Italy include:

- Expert tuition with a leading vocal trainer
- Superb setting in the stunning Emilia-Romagna hills
- An afternoon and evening spent in Bologna
- Historic sightseeing in the beautiful medieval town of Dozza
- A wine tasting afternoon in a renowned local vineyard
- Informal performances and barbecue afternoon
- Final performance in a local venue

The singing courses:

Sacred Choral Course

Let renowned conductor Neil Ferris lead you through a repertoire of ancient and contemporary sacred choral works composed for SATB choir. The final concert in a nearby church is a real joy for choral singers and experience of singing as part of a choir and the ability to read music will be expected before signing up for this highly-rated and unique singing course.

Secular Choral Course

Led by well-known vocal performer, trainer, writer and broadcaster, Mary King, the Secular Choral Course focuses on classical, jazz, musical theatre, pop and folk music arranged for a choir. From day one the course is designed to focus your vocal techniques and have fun as you engage with music, the group and your surroundings.

What you can expect from both singing courses:

You’ll have daily rehearsal sessions and receive group feedback given by your course instructor regarding all aspects of singing. One-to-one vocal sessions are also offered to all participants. Prior to the singing holiday in Italy you’ll be invited to meet the rest of the group in London where you’ll also be encouraged to sing as you familiarize yourself with some of the music you'll be learning on holiday.

Relaxing and socialising is, of course, part and parcel of the whole holiday experience with a wonderful swimming pool and beautiful surrounding area adding to a variety of afternoon excursions.

The venue for the courses is the historic Palazzo Loup, a four-star country house hotel where accommodation includes en-suite guest rooms for two occupants as well as solo singer rooms which are available on request at a single supplement rate. Non-singing partners are also welcome to join the holiday at a reduced rate.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Singing holiday in Italy

It is important to minimise our impact on the local environment for the benefit of future generations.

While in Italy we aim to use local produce wherever possible. We recycle much of our waste and keep energy usage to a minimum.

Water conservation is always a key concern and sheets and towels are washed only at the clients’ request. We also ask all clients to conserve water by taking short showers instead of baths.

When we are out and about in the countryside we encourage participants to preserve the local flora and fauna by sticking to established paths and taking all litter home with them.

In the UK we maintain a small office which minimises our use of electricity and gas. We are web-based and all correspondence is sent to clients electronically. The small amount of paper we use in the office is recycled and we rely on natural light for most of the day.

Our accommodation in Italy is in a hotel which employs many local people in the town of Loiano for all roles including catering, cleaning and maintenance staff. The area is not well known to tourists, but our aim is always to engage as much as possible with the local community and to allow our guests to experience the best that this fascinating region has to offer through visiting places of interest, meeting local people and tasting the local cuisine.

As far as possible, all of our food and drink is sourced from local suppliers and we prefer to use fresh, seasonal produce. The course participants are also encouraged to make use of the local shops and bars in the vicinity which will help to support the economy, vital for local businesses. There are also several artisan producers in the area and participants are encouraged to visit these and purchase items to take home, another way for our visits to help boost the local economy.

Our final concert will raise money for a local charity, and is a way of giving something back to the community who have been our hosts for the week.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying in the beautiful Pousada at Guimaraes, meeting a variety of friendly people on the singing, guitar and photography courses, the singing course itself and working on challenging music, led by Mary King, singing in the final concert in Guimaraes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It benefited local hotel staff and also, by performing in Guimaraes it benefited the audience culturally. I travelled to and from the venue by ferry and train so slightly less carbon footprint. Did not seem to support conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - good value for money, great company, organisers and leaders, very relaxed (the big swimming pool helped!) a beautiful location (though my only slight moan is that it was quite a way from the town, but this was a good excuse to swim, lounge by the pool reading a book and exploring the lovely gardens!)Food was great and wine abundant. A really enjoyable and rewarding singing holiday - I hope to go on many more.
