Responsible tourism: Romania walking holiday, self guided

Environment

We advise all of our clients to stay to the marked paths. This is to maintain the environment as they pass so that it remains pristine for walkers using the pathways in the future. It is also important in order to keep some distance from the local wildlife which can include bears and wolves in the woods. We also advise that they take all of their rubbish with them until the end of the day and recycle or dispose of it as is appropriate.

The holiday is particularly good for wildlife lovers. The Carpathians offer a wide selection of birds and mammals in it’s rural location. Eco-tourism helps maintain this area so that it remains this way for future visitors.

As much as is possible on this trek we have tried to ensure that the walking is done from hotel to hotel, meaning that there is no need to be transported from or to a hotel each day and reduces the need for transportation journeys and their effect on the environment. When the luggage needs to be transferred we use the hotels or local companies to ensure that the driving required is kept to a minimum.

Community

Most of the hotels we use in Romania are small and family run enabling these establishments to continue into the future. They are the establishments which are most in need of the tourism income and their ability to continue their success is important to the Transylvanian area of Romania. We also arrange for our clients to eat either at the hotels or at small local restaurants, again keeping the income in the small towns and villages where they stay overnight. We also use either the hotel, local companies or local taxi companies for the luggage and people transfers necessary for this trek. This also keeps the environmental impact of the trek to a minimum.

While on this trek our clients will come into contact with and be able to observe the local communities of the Transylvanian area. This will give them the opportunity to experience the rural Transylvanian life in action as they pass through.

Take a flower book, there were so many we could not recognise. We were a group of four vegetarians, the food was fantastic whether you were a meat eater or not. All thoughtfully prepared.

All accommodation was run locally with products purchased in nearby towns and villages.

This was a great walking holiday. Hard to pick a most memorable....The country was really beautiful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The walk directions were particularly good. The last day surprisingly hard! Take walking poles and good boots as some sections quite muddy.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We always stayed with local people and ate locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great holiday. Romania is a beautiful country. The people were always friendly and helpful. Our accommodation was always clean and comfortable. We ate well and the walks were very good...varied terrain. Definitely recommend use of walking poles... The walk directions were very good and we managed perfectly...except for one slight detour. Romania is well worth a visit.....Bran Castle and Rasnov Citadel added value....we also spent a couple of days in Bucharest...highly recommended.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We were bowled over by the unspoilt Romanian countryside. No tractors or combined harvesters, just people creating hay stacks using pitch forks, horses
and wooden carts being used for transport and horses dragging logs down from the forest. Each place we stayed was interesting in its own right and visits to
the Black church in Brasov and Bran Castle added to the holiday.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Unfortunately, or fortunately, we didn't see any bears on the walk. We found out that there are viewing platforms where feeding areas can be watched at a
safe distance. Might be worth staying an extra day to go and see the bears.
We also enjoyed our few days at the end of the walk visiting Sibiu and Sighisoara (especially the fortified churches near the latter).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the tourism that walking holidays such as this are obviously helping the local community, though Transylvania itself is one of the better off areas in Romania. We met lots of friendly local people including confident optimistic young people, a lot of whom spoke good English which they had learned from the TV (explained some of the american accents)

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. A moderate walk which left plenty of time and energy to relax and chat to the local people.
