Description of Kenya luxury safari, including Giraffe Manor

Aimed at those who want to enjoy a Kenyan adventure without foregoing creature comforts, this Kenya luxury safari takes in Nairobi’s Giraffe Manor and the wild landscapes of the Masai Mara in one neat week-long package.

You’ll spend the first three days of your holiday at renowned Giraffe Manor, where you can get up close to semi-habituated giraffes as they pop their heads through the windows of the breakfast room, or simply enjoy the gardens and comfortable, upscale rooms.

Moving on to the legendary Masai Mara you’ll stay in luxury tented splendour at Angama Mara, which sits on a hillside above the Great Rift Valley and has spectacular views over the landscape. There’s a huge variety on offer here, from game drives, to walking safaris to hot air balloon rides at dawn. Or, for a bit of romance, private bush dinners and picnics can be arranged.

Departure information

This trip can be tailormade at a time to suit you and can be adapted to suit your interests, budget and requirements as necessary.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

When ever possible we use accommodation that savours every drop of precious water; from using environmentally friendly flushing toilets and to savouring rain water for washing, to using solar power heating. Accommodation when travelling will vary, but we do try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, promoting the use of locally eco-lodges where we can. Please bear in mind that it is not always possible to find eco-friendly accommodation in some remote destinations; if this is the case then we make every effort to alert the management of the accommodation in question to ways of improving their service with the environment in mind. We try to use shared excursions and transfers, minimising the carbon emissions from the vehicles used.

We know our wildlife; in fact it is buried within the roots of our company and will always be so. In the 1970s Giraffe Manor took in some highly endangered Rothschild giraffes as part of a conservation project run by the AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife). Since then the Rothschild giraffes have thrived in their home of the 140 acres indigenous jungle, along with warthog, dik dik, waterbuck and over 180 species of birds. The hotel, together with the associated Giraffe Centre next door, operates a breeding programme aimed at reintroducing the species back into Kenya’s protected wild areas. Giraffe Manor and Sasaab Camp are owned and run by The Safari Collection, where eco tourism is the very backbone of the company ethos. Their conservation team is committed to protecting, maintaining and enhancing the incredible landscapes in which the hotels are located. One of the company’s projects is The Mara Cheetah Project which provides guides with cameras and GPS so they can photograph their cheetah sightings and logged with the Kenya Wildlife Trust. This project also conducts training workshops for the guides.

We aim to reduce waste and our impact on the environment within our destinations, and at home in the UK, where our offices our based. We work in partnership with the Borough of Brighton & Hove in an attempt to recycle and reuse as much as possible. Our clients are always advised on the best way to do this when away. We recommend using environmentally friendly shampoos, soaps and toiletries, to avoid leaving any litter (whether it is biodegradable or not)

The Impacts of this Trip

All of our trips are conducted by local guides and drivers who specialise in this region of Africa. Through the employment of local staff, money is fed directly back into individual families and villages that would otherwise not benefit from tourism. Wherever possible we use locally run and managed accommodation; lodging does vary however and can be in environmentally low impact eco-lodges or luxury camps.

Angama Mara is founded on the deeply embedded principle of running a profitable business in order to make a meaningful and sustainable difference to the communities that neighbour the lodge, and the wildlife and land that surround it. Through staying at Angama Mara you will be supporting their foundations efforts in education, healthcare and conservation with each guest contributing ten US dollars per night to the foundation.

The purpose of our safaris is to contribute to local populations, communities and projects. We give our travellers advice on how to interact with the local population, flora and fauna in order to minimise any negative impact. We advise people not to bargain just for the sake of it and because it is the “thing to do”; you should pay what you feel the object is worth to yourself and the vendor, bearing in mind local cultures, society and standard of living.
