1 Reviews of Canary Islands walking holiday, La Palma
4 out of 5 stars
Reviewed on 02 Feb 2020 by Brian Rogers
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The 5th walk which started at the highest point of the island, Roque de Muchachos with its views into the giant caldera.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The walking terrain is in parts quite tough with some steep and slippy descents. I don’t usually use walking poles much but found them indispensable on this trip. On the higher ground on days 5 and 6 it was cool and was actually icy underfoot in the morning of day 5. Days 1 to 4 along the coast were warm but very wet one day so you need to be prepared for a range of weather.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Economically we supported local hotels, buses, taxis and shops.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very good, it felt like a great place for walking that is relatively unknown and unspoilt. It’s a good choice for some warm weather in the winter.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
We arrange for our clients to take the ferry from their arrival point in the Canaries of Tenerife over to La Palma if they do not fly directly to the island. This drastically lowers the carbon footprint compared to taking another flight in order to make the journey. It also enables the clients to have a peaceful and scenic journey with a unique view of the Canary Islands. We advise all of our clients to stay to the marked paths. This is to maintain the environment as they pass so that it remains pristine for walkers using the pathways in the future. We also advise that they take all of their rubbish with them until the end of the day and recycle or dispose of it as is appropriate.
Our suppliers on the island support us on our environmental goals. One of them arranges guided walking which emphasises the beauty of the islands environment and it turn helps to support it.
People
On La Palma there is not as much mass tourism as some other of the Canary Islands and this makes it more peaceful that the more popular islands. Tourism adds economic vibrancy to the island. These come primarily in the form of walkers coming to enjoy the fantastic paths that the island has to offer. Most of the hotels we use on La Palma are small and family run enabling these establishments to continue into the future. They are the establishments which are most in need of the tourism income and their ability to continue their success is important to how the island works. We also arrange for our clients to eat either at the hotels or at small local restaurants, again keeping the income in the small towns and villages where they stay overnight. We provide all of our clients with a list of phrases in Spanish which they can use on their holiday. This can not just help in situations where they meet non-English speakers but can be a pleasant way to break the ice when arriving at a hotel or restaurant.
