Description of Peru tailormade holiday

Travel through Peru, experiencing its beautiful landscapes, ancient sites and fascinating cities on this 14-day tour. View condors soaring above the Colca Canyon, sail on Lake Titicaca, explore colonial Lima and marvel at the mountain-top ruins of Machu Picchu.

Begin in Lima, exploring the modern and colonial sides to this lovely city, before flying to Arequipa, where you have a free day to explore. Then head over the high mountain pass to the town of Chivay, travelling through the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve where you can see flamingos feeding on the mineral rich waters. An early morning excursion to see condors flying above Colca Canyon at dawn is a highlight, and there is also the chance to visit small village communities, to learn about local life. A boat tour of Lake Titicaca, visiting the floating islands of Uros and Taquile, is followed by time in Cusco, where you have a whole day to enjoy the city’s varied museums, markets and restaurants. Finally, step back into Inca history with a tour of the Sacred Valley, the train to Aguas Calientes and a guided tour of the Incan citadel of Machu Picchu.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Peru tailormade holiday

On our Highlights of Peru Holiday we take great care to preserve the environment in the areas you will be visiting. By travelling overland from Arequipa to Puno, and from Puno to Cusco, (in shared or public transport where possible) you will reduce the domestic flights needed to get around the country and lower the carbon footprint of your trip.

We are proud to support our local operator in Arequipa in annual clean-up and reforestation campaigns. In 2013 over 400 people participated in the Colca Canyon clean-up, including school and university students, local people and professionals from Arequipa. In the Corporaque area, 550 new trees were planted by our local operator and volunteers from the local community. By working with the community on these projects, local people are involved in dealing with waste disposal in remote areas and caring for the environment in their daily lives.

We provide responsible travel guidelines to all our travellers with advice on how they can help to preserve the environments they are visiting.

We work with local operators and accommodation owners who share our commitment to responsible travel wherever possible.

The Highlights of Peru Holiday includes a stay in a community run lodge in the Colca Canyon, as well as a visit to the local community in Puno. You will meet local people and eat locally sourced and prepared traditional foods. Your participation will directly benefit local communities economically and also socially, as traditional ways of life and customs are validated. We are respectful towards the communities that we will take you to visit, and you will always be accompanied by a local guide. The family run tour operator you will travel with in the Colca Canyon organises and finances regular events such as travelling clinics and environmental projects in Colca, so that the wider community benefits from tourism, not just those directly involved.

Our local operator in Cusco is owned and run by a local family who take pride in employing local people and in giving back to the wider community. They organise regular events to support isolated communities in the Cusco area, including emergency relief campaigns to areas affected by flooding during the rainy season.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our group of 8 visited an elementary school in the Sacred Valley (near Chinceros). We gave each child a goodie" bags filled with small toys and school
supplies (we brought from the U.S.) We enjoyed interacting with the children and seeing their smiles! Enjoyed the Vistadome train from Ollantaytambo to Aquas Calientes. The views around Machu Picchu were amazing!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Important to know the new rules and guidelines for traveling/hiking Machu Picchu.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We hope so.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our 10-day trip in Peru was fantastic from beginning to end! From the moment our group (4 couples) started planning our trip to Peru with our tour operator. Her suggestions and recommendations couldn't have been more perfect for us and our interests. Heather is an extremely competent travel consultant; great communicator and very knowledgeable about the areas we were visiting. While we were planning, she always got back to us promptly to answer our questions. The properties were perfect. All our guides and drivers were warm, friendly and loved teaching us about their country. A few times we spontaneously wanted to visit something not on our itinerary and our guides were flexible with these new additions. Our trip was flawless! You can totally put your trust in this company to organize a fantastic trip for you, whatever your budget. I can highly recommend this company.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The hospitality of the hotel staff and guides. The Amazon jungle trips. And Heather's constant monitoring even over the Christmas week end….

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

On arrival at Lima, take an immediate connection to Cusco, rather than spend half a night in Lima. Do Pisac on the way back from Ollantaytambo to Cusco, rather than as part of the Sacred valley tour. There is no baggage restriction on luggage on the boat from PEM to the Inketarra Resort. Ensure the guides speak good English. Remember that even water is charged for in "all inclusive AP rates". Very European, un American practice.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, nice to meet NO EXPATS, meaning every service was provided by locals.
The bus from Aguas Caliente to Machu Pichu reduced the number of vehicles that would otherwise make that round trip.

The few resorts approved in the Amazon forest results in higher rates, but must be good for the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very Good - a "4" on a scale of 1 to 5..

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Peru is a wonderful destination with so much more to offer than just the iconic Machu Picchu - all thoroughly recommended.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

As we did, do the circuit in an anti-clockwise direction, so that you finish up with
Macchu Pichu as the jewel in the crown, but don't miss out Arequipa and Colca Canyon.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In a relatively poor country where tourism is so important to the economy, every aspect of such a trip benefits the people somehow - even paying a child to take their photograph is a valuable contribution. Likewise, tourism as a source of income, by its very need, supports conservation of the tourist sights. Balancing this need with the reduction in environmental impact is a conundrum that Peru seems more aware of than a number of other countries we have visited. We wish them well in their efforts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A first rate and memorable experience made to run like clockwork by the efforts of the team at the Holiday providers.
