Peru holiday, Machu Picchu and the Amazon

Description of Peru holiday, Machu Picchu and the Amazon
Combine two of South America’s most spectacular ancient and natural sites, on this eight-day, fully customisable tour from Machu Picchu to the Amazon Rainforest.
Cusco, with its heady mix of colonial arcades and Incan culture is your perfect introduction to Peru. From here expert, English-speaking guides will unveil the chequered history of the city and escort you through the Sacred Valley to Pisac’s legendary indigenous handicraft market. They’ll also enable you to understand more about the complex and fascinating ancient Incan civilisation on a guided tour of iconic and breathtaking Machu Picchu.
From Cusco a short flight (not included) takes you to Puerto Maldonado and the start of your Amazon adventure. Staying in basic but comfortable rainforest lodges in the Tambopata Reserve, you’ll take guided boat trips on the river and day and night walks in the jungle to spot some of Peru’s elusive, endangered wildlife including black caiman and giant river otters. Binoculars at the ready! This is a real jungle experience, so be aware that your room may not be equipped with electricity or hot water.
This trip can be completely tailored to your wishes, with extra nights in Cusco or the Amazon, or additional tours to other areas of Peru all possible. Included are your transfers with a Spanish-speaking driver, all guided tours, entrance fees (except into Tambopata Reserve), B&B accommodation and other meals as indicated.

Responsible Travel
Planet
The Amazon Rainforest lodge you will visit on this tour is located in the “La Torre” sector of the Tambopata national reserve buffer zone and is surrounded by an area of private conservation (ACP) with pristine forest and natural bamboo patches. The lodge is constructed with traditional materials from the Amazon. The palm leaf thatching, timber and bamboo maintain an architecture that blends in perfectly with the surrounding nature and the gardens full of medicinal and ornamental plants. In addition to encouraging visits to responsibly run Rainforest Lodges, we make regular donations to ARBIO – a non-profit organisation based in Puerto Maldonado. Their goal is to protect the rainforest around the city as it grows and encroaches on the surrounding forest with the development of the new Inter-Oceanic Highway.
We provide responsible travel guidelines to all our travellers with advice on how they can help to preserve the environments they are visiting.
People
We work with local operators and accommodation owners who share our commitment to responsible travel wherever possible. Our local operator in Cusco is owned and run by a local family who take pride in employing local people and in giving back to the wider community. They organise regular events to support isolated communities in the Cusco area, including emergency relief campaigns to areas affected by flooding during the rainy season.
The Amazon lodge we work with is a family business run by naturalists who prioritise social and environmental responsibility as well as high quality service. With this goal they finance and advise upon rural and eco-tourism projects with the inhabitants of the “La Torre” area. Local people are encouraged to participate and are offered an alternative source of income through tourism.
Our recommendations for fair trade shopping and eating opportunities in each destination, as well as details of community projects which can be visited are available to all our travellers.
