Description of Classical and Jazz Guitar course in Portugal

There can be few other locations more perfect to learn how to progress and develop classical and jazz guitar playing other than Portugal. This seven day course lets guitarists take their skill level up a notch as they immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Portugal’s Braga region and learn from the expert instruction presented by Bridget and Milton Mermikides.

Guitar-playing guests are invited to soak up the traditionally relaxing ambience of Portugal from within a lovingly restored 12th century monastery where a week of guitar lessons provides an incredibly immersive experience culminating in appearing in public to showcase your new skills.

This classical and jazz guitar course is as much about socialising and discovering the true music of Portugal as it is about fine tuning and developing techniques, with an eclectic mix of guitar genres ensuring all students get to benefit from what promises to be an intensive week to never forget.

Classical and Jazz guitar course highlights:

Intensive lessons with two of Portugal’s leading experts
Stunning setting within the town of Guimarães
Sightseeing afternoon and an evening of excitement in Porto
Cultural and historic sightseeing in nearby Braga
Vineyard visit to taste some of Portugal’s finest wines
Outdoor grill party and public charity concert

What to expect:

Throughout this week away you’ll learn how to develop your strengths and iron out your weaknesses as you embark on fairly intensive workshops featuring solo & ensemble repertoire, theory sessions, guitar technique, sight reading and a whole host of guitar-centric skills to help you prepare for the end of week public performance. Not only will the final public performance help you focus on your studies but it also raises funds for a local charity which will, of course, increase chances of a warm and welcoming reception. Throughout the course each student will receive tuition and individual focus based around their own specific needs.

Aside from the tuition, guests are invited to rest, relax and enjoy the sumptuous surroundings of Pousada de Guimarães, a 12th century monastery that’s been carefully restored to its former architectural glory, complete with well-kept gardens and swimming pool. All guest rooms are en-suite and have been renovated to an excellent level to comfortably suit two people, although solo rooms are available on request and for an additional single supplement.

Numerous excursions have also been arranged throughout the week to ensure you get a complete picture of this beautiful region of Portugal as well as beginning to understand the relationship between the land, the people and the guitar.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Classical and Jazz Guitar course in Portugal

It is important to minimise our impact on the local environment for the benefit of future generations.

While in Portugal we aim to use local produce wherever possible. We recycle much of our waste and keep energy usage to a minimum.

Water conservation is always a key concern and sheets and towels are washed only at the clients’ request. We also ask all clients to conserve water by taking short showers instead of baths.

When we are out and about in the countryside we encourage participants to preserve the local flora and fauna by sticking to established paths and taking all litter home with them.

In the UK we maintain a small office which minimises our use of electricity and gas. We are web-based and all correspondence is sent to clients electronically. The small amount of paper we use in the office is recycled and we rely on natural light for most of the day.

Our accommodation in Portugal is in a hotel which employs many local people in the town of Guimarães for all roles including catering, cleaning and maintenance staff. Being a UNESCO World Heritage town, the area is accustomed to tourists, and the local people are very proud of their heritage and traditions, as well as their gastronomic specialities. Our aim is always to engage as much as possible with the local community and to allow our guests to experience the best that this fascinating region has to offer through visiting places of interest, meeting local people and tasting the local cuisine.

As far as possible, all of our food and drink is sourced from local suppliers and we prefer to use fresh, seasonal produce. The course participants are also encouraged to make use of the local shops and bars in the vicinity which will help to support the economy, vital for local businesses. There are also several artisan producers in the area and participants are encouraged to visit these and purchase items to take home, another way for our visits to help boost the local economy.

Our final concert will raise money for a local charity, and is a way of giving something back to the community who have been our hosts for the week.
