Description of South Africa, Botswana and Zambia holiday

This overland trip is a spectacular odyssey that starts in South Africa, dips into some beautiful spots in Swaziland, back to Kruger National Park in South Africa, and then up to Zimbabwe and Zambia. Every day is completely different on this carefully crafted itinerary and often in a different country too.

Wildlife watching highlights on this holiday include Kruger National Park to seek out the zebra and lion among many other greats, as well as an optional trip to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in Swaziland. In Zimbabwe, Matobo National Park is not only home to rhinos but also over 3,500 ancient rock art sites.

Crossing the border from Zimbabwe into Zambia is a pretty spectacular moment, as the iconic Victoria Falls form the natural border between them. Take some time in and around the Falls to seek out other optional adventures such as a sunset cruise down the Zambezi or white water rafting on it. This is adventure central if two weeks covering this amount of ground isnít adventure enough!

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: South Africa, Botswana and Zambia holiday

This tour travels on one of our own fleet of modern, powerful Mercedes Benz expedition vehicles. These vehicles are less than 10 years old and are custom-built to comply with strict Euro IV emissions control regulations set by the European Union. This makes them one of the cleanest overland vehicles operating in Africa. They are regularly checked and maintained to the highest possible standard in order to limit carbon emissions and to ensure the comfort and safety of our passengers.

This tour is 100% camping and we have set out of responsible travel camping policy on our website. We concentrate on existing campsites, keeping our campsites small and focusing activity on previously cleared areas. We do not disturb vegetation, urinate into or near streams instead using toilet and ablution facilities provided and we avoid using soaps with phosphates and washing while swimming in fresh waterways. These policies are reiterated by our tour leaders throughout the duration of the tour.

During this voyage passengers visit Lesotho, a country where many people live below the international poverty line. During our time, we stay at Malealea Camp which does a lot for the local community. By staying at this camp we are supporting the surrounding village. Local villagers are invited into the campsite in the evening where they sing and play music for the travellers where they can give a voluntary donation. The camp also trains local men from the village to work as guides for the excursions.

With almost 30 years operating tours, we have built longstanding and successful relationships with business partners throughout the world. We are highly selective of local associates and aim to approach only those that share our positive and long-term development outlook. We are committed to being honest about the impacts our products may have on local lifestyles and communities. We ensure locals are happy to have our products in their areas and do not impose developments if they are unwanted.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Everyday brought new adventures and experiences - Very early morning starts meant we got to see lots of both sunrises and sunsets, sunset cruise in
Zimbabwe brought us up close to wallowing Hippo's and a walking safari got as close to a crash of 7-8 Rhino and then walking in the vicinity of these
beautiful animals. In Kruger a pack of very young Hyena were out of the den playing in daylight close to the road. Spray off Victoria Falls from both
Zimbabwe and Zambia side before a micro-light flight over falls being the finishing highlight of this superb tour - and my wife and I got to fly wing tip to
wing tip over the falls which made it even more special.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Good general camera with a decent zoom lense, gopro or similar camera for the more adventurous and to use at the falls as you get very wet from spray - Need to select the time of year for travel though - animals are in the long grass during wet season so difficult to spot but in dry season Victoria Falls is dry (hence we selected June as being best compromise for both). Definitely recommend doing micro-light over falls - not cheap and can't use own camera (can buy either video or photo's of your flight from wing mounted gopro) but the experience and views are something else.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
