2021 Antarctica, South Georgia and Falklands cruise

“Wave goodbye to dry land and set off on this three-week voyage into Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands. Penguins included.”

Ushuaia | Drake Passage | Antarctic Peninsula | Elephant Island | South Georgia | Falkland Islands

Description of 2021 Antarctica, South Georgia and Falklands cruise

Follow in the ship-wake of the great explorers and jump aboard an Antarctica cruise in 2021. Rowdy penguin colonies, wild whale waters and scientific outposts – it’s a peek into a world lived right on the edge.

You’ll start in Ushuaia, in the deep south of Argentina, before tackling the formidable Drake Passage. After two days at sea, you’ll come across the Antarctic Peninsula – a shape-shifting icy coastline of penguin beaches and calving glaciers. Next up, South Georgia, is the Galapagos of the South. Chillingly remote, it’ll be you, the sea and a host of Southern Ocean whale species.

The beach-dashed Falkland Islands make a suitably surreal finish to this 2021 Antarctic Cruise, giving you the chance to meet people who choose to live right at the edge of the world.

Expedition cruising

What is Expedition Cruising?
This is the name we give to cruising holidays which visit the Polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic. Your small vessel will usually carry around 100 - 130 passengers, accompanied by a crew and Expedition Team consisting of experts in the local landscapes, wildlife and history of the islands you will be visiting. How does it work?
Your trip will consist of a combination of cruising and land based discovery. Days at sea will be spent admiring the view, photographing the sea birds and marine wildlife that you may encounter, cruising past stunning icebergs and attending the talks that your Expedition Team will be conducting.

Shore landings will be scheduled to take place weather permitting throughout your trip. Please be aware that due to adverse weather conditions all scheduled shore visits may not be possible, but travelling in the summer months increases our chances of favourable weather.

You will travel ashore in rigid inflatable boats (RIBS) known as zodiacs; a degree of physical mobility will be required for passengers to climb in and out.

What ship will I be travelling on?
Travelling with us to explore the Polar regions, you will be on one of two ships, more details about your particular vessel can be given by our travel consultants when you enquire about your particular date.

Can I book my flights with you?
Yes! We are a fully ATOL bonded tour operator meaning that we can book flights from the UK as part of your holiday package. Just ask us for a quote including flights when you make your enquiry.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Antarctica is the largest wilderness on earth and remains relatively unaffected by large scale human activities. To keep it that way, IAATO – the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators has set out guidelines and regulations to protect and preserve this unique and pristine environment. All tourism-related activities are therefore planned and conducted with both environmental protection and safety in mind.

We use highly regulated, licensed vessels which are well equipped to operate in these remote ecosystems. We are fully compliant with all rules set out by IAATO. We carefully choose the ships we want to charter, and its small size has a far lesser impact on shore landings. We see our voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula as an expedition, not a sightseeing trip. Smaller ships, such as ours can navigate narrow water ways, and by carrying fewer passengers generates far less waste. We also carry any waste back to our home port, unlike some of the larger ships which do not allow for this.

Our pre-departure information pack provides our passengers with all the information required for their expedition, from what to take with you to practical advice on how to minimise your impact on the Antarctic environment and how to interact with the wildlife on the continent.

On this trip you will visit the local community living on the Falkland Islands. Seeing as there are only a few industries here and very little contact with the outside world, they always welcome use with open arms. All the guided services and hotels on the island are run locally and food and other commodities are also sourced locally, meaning all profits go directly to the communities that live in the Falklands.

We align ourselves with the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, which aims to conserve the Mawson Huts at Cape Denison in East Antarctica. The foundation was first established in 1997 and has already funded and organised more than ten expeditions to the site.

We also work with three different charities including Project Peru who run an orphanage in Zapallal, a shanty town outskirts of Lima. And ANIA, a high-profile Peruvian NGO working with children to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it efficiently.
