Description of Overland tour from Vic Falls to Cape Town

What a place to start this adventure - Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. They call it ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ - by height and width, this is the largest waterfall in the world, and an incredible sight it is. You’ll spend a day at what is generally considered the top adventure tourism destination in Africa, with just a few of the available activities including bungy jumping, grade 5 whitewater rafting, kayaking, jet boating and sunset helicopter flights over the foaming torrents.

Then it’s goodbye to adrenaline heaven, and on to the magnificent Chobe National Park in Botswana to embark on a memorable river game cruise, during which you’ll likely see plenty of elephants - the population here is superb. From Chobe you’ll head to the nearby Okavango Delta, and a trip by mokoro canoe, to see crocodiles, hippos, zebras and many more.

Crossing the border into Namibia, there will be another game drive, and an evening spent relaxing by a floodlit water hole, where animals from rhinos to elephants, lions and leopards are regularly seen.

As you move into South Africa, and your final destination in cosmopolitan Cape Town, you’ll spend time at iconic landmarks such as the Cape Cross seal colony, the famous Spitzkoppe rock formations, and the vast sand dunes of Namib-Naukluft Park.

The beauty of this tour is the opportunity to get off the beaten track as well as visiting the popular sites. As part of a small group travelling overland for several weeks, you’ll camp, occasionally in the bush, and help prepare meals from ingredients that you’ll source in local markets along the way. This is Africa travel as it was supposed to be.

Overland

If you’re looking for adventure, an opportunity to travel with like-minded travellers and to get off the beaten track then this type of trip is for you! We will sometimes be covering long distances over a period of a few days but will then most often be camped up for a few days with opportunities for adventure activities, visiting local communities, time in a town or city to chill out or wildlife viewing experiences. The roads are sometimes bumpy and you need to expect the unexpected! This type of travel is through regions where things can change and experiences are more important than luxury – borders sometimes close and there may not always be hot water in the showers! You will generally be camping out under the stars, sometimes out in the bush, but generally more on campsites. (Our South America and Central Asia trips also use small locally-run hostels and guest houses). The trips are fully participative so you will be involved shopping for food in local markets, cooking for your group (on a rota system), collecting water and setting up camp. If you’re not confident about doing any of these things beforehand, don’t worry our crew are there to help you and you’ll be good at it by the time you finish!

You will be travelling on one of our own purpose built overlanding vehicles with up to 24 travellers, many of whom will be travelling on their own. It is a great way for solo travellers to travel. We have lost count of the number of travellers who have met their future spouse on one of our trips! Our vehicles are fully equipped with tents and cooking equipment and are designed for great all-round viewing and a sociable seating plan. You will be accompanied on your trip by a Driver and Tour Leader and, depending on your trip, we often use local guides at sites of specific interest for more detailed information.

This type of travel will provide you with a plethora of memories and stories to tell, new-found travelling companions and friends and a well-exercised spirit of adventure!

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

Water: Before commencing one of our tours travellers are sent detailed pre-departure information which includes advice on using water sparingly. We recognise water to be one of the world's most precious commodities, particularly, in some of the areas this trip travels through. Due to the camping nature of this trip we carry a lot of our water for cooking, drinking and washing with us. Filling up heavy jerry cans, we find, helps focus the mind on the importance of water conservation!
We also encourage our travellers to bring reusable water bottles from home with them for the trip. These can be filled from the truck's water supplies. This helps to minimise the usage of plastic water bottles.

Waste: at the point of booking a tour with us, all our travellers receive detailed pre-departure information which contains a large section on travelling responsibly. This includes advice on minimising the amount of waste they create on the trip. This informs travellers on what they can do before they go, for example removing toiletries from unnecessary packaging and taking a reusable water bottle and gives advice on what they should do whilst on the tour, for example, disposing of litter appropriately.
All of this information on waste reduction is re-iterated at the pre-departure meeting at the start of the tour, with specific advice for the areas we visit on the tour. As a company we have a big commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling in our UK office. We are very aware of the environmental impact of our office in the UK, so we recycle and compost as much of our waste as possible. We try to reduce paper usage ,but when necessary we use recycled paper and stationery. Our brochure is available to view or download online and the paper version is printed on stock produced from sustainable sources and vegetable based inks.

Community

Volunteering and Charity: As a company we support a number of charities and local projects across our area of operation. In Zimbabwe we provide financial and practical support to a Children's Home in Harare. One of the highlights, for us and them, of our support is that we run an event, fondly known by our crew as 'Kid's Week' in which we take, all the children and staff out on a day trip using our expedition trucks. Many of the children rarely leave the compound they live on so it is a big event for them. Our most recent event, in Jan 2015, involved taking 77 children and 11 staff out for a day to a local Lake and Bird Park. After an informative walk, talk and lunch the children had great fun on the bouncy castles we hired. We also bought all the children notebooks and coloring pencils and stocked the Home up with food before we left. In the past we have equipped the Home with a borehole; educational materials; mattresses; clothing and a variety of other items.

Friends and Neighbours: We encourage our travellers to spread their 'tourist dollar' by supporting local artisans and restaurants. We also purchase food locally, always endeavouring to buy from markets and roadside sellers if we can. We buy our tents locally in order to support the local economy and to reduce the environmental impact of international transportation. We visit a number of sites during the trip which employ local guides including the Okavango Delta, the Cheetah Park and Robben Island.
