Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Highlights of Haiti tour

As one of the first tour operators to visit the island nation since the devastating 2010 earthquake, you will be among the first travellers to see the country unspoilt by tourism.

By working with the Inter-American Development Bank, we have created a unique trip through this fascinating country. With visits to Creole, Vodou and musical sites, you will witness a culture unlike any other and see things few get the chance to.

All of our hotels in Haiti are locally owned, ensuring that we keep tourism dollars on the island and not in the hands of large conglomerates. The hotels themselves all have a unique and authentic Haitian feel to them, ensuring that you will have a once in a lifetime experience if you travel here.

Citadelle Laferrière
This UNESCO fortress atop a Haitian mountain is a spectacular way to start your trip and is full of interesting history, having a great effect on Haiti’s past

Eating and drinking with the locals
At regular intervals on this tour, you will learn how to make the food of the native Taino people, including kasav, which is eaten with meals as flatbread. Eating together with locals, you will learn more about how food has shaped the Haiti culture and you will be able to interact in a way which you would not on your typical tour holiday.

Art Community Tour
Jacmel is famous for its artists, beaches and celebrations, and our tour will take you through a number of artists’ studio to gain an understanding of how art fits into the Haitian culture and how it has been affected since the earthquake. You will of course get the chance to purchase some art should you wish, ensuring that tourist dollars are having a positive impact to the local community and going to those locals who matter.

Water bottles
For the duration of this trip, we ensure that our travellers keep the number of water bottles purchased to a minimum, while trying to refill the current bottle as much as possible. Water bottle pollution can have a devastating effect, especially on island nations surrounded by water, and we strive to keep this type of waste to an absolute minimum.

Art Creation Foundation
Your trip will include a visit to a local foundation called Art Creation Foundation for Children. Teaching children and young people tradition arts and crafts, the foundation is a means to keep them off the street and out of trouble. The children are mentored to become leaders in their community and are given meals in what is referred to as their ‘second home’. Find out about the amazing impact this foundation is having by taking this trip.

Grotte Marie-Jeanne
These amazing caverns have been kept a secret for a long time, and there are not many to have seen inside. Our guide will take you through the caves, explaining the environmental impact and facts surrounding the caves during the trip. With spectacular scenery and underground landscapes, it’s most definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

Port-au-Prince tour
See the devastating consequences of the recent earthquake first hand on a tour through Haiti’s primary city. Through this tour will learn about much of Haiti’s ancient and recent history, plus get a glimpse at how life is gradually emerging out of the rubble in the form of the local culture and art scene.
