Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
In the middle of the mountainous, desert landscape of Wadi Feynan and the Dana Biosphere Reserve lies the Feynan Eco Lodge. Lit by candlelight with serene court yards and terraces on which to relax and watch the sun set this is one of the most unique eco-experiences in Jordan. Set up by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in partnership with Eco Hotels this 26 roomed lodge is solar powered and offers economic opportunities for the local inhabitants as well as raises funds to protect the local environment. The rooms all have private balconies and views over Wadi Feynan and the restaurant provides three meals a day using local herbs, preserves, homemade jams and teas from the Dana Biosphere.
We are promoting the ancient heritage and natural landscape of Jordan through visiting Petra and Umm Ar-Rasas, UNESCO World Heritage Siteís. Sites are chosen by the UNESCO committee and must "bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to civilisation", "an important interchange of human values" or be outstanding examples of major stages of Earth's history or ecological and biological processes in evolution.
We attempt to reduce plastic bottle use wherever possible by promoting use of reusable and filtered water bottles. Our partnership with Water-To-Go provides a discount on filtered water bottles to our clients. We do not provide water from plastic bottles to our clients in country but always ensure there is regular access to drinking water on our tours.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Throughout the tour we will be walking to authentic Jordanian villages, little changed over centuries. We will be staying in guesthouses within these charming mountainous villages to support the local tourism industry and to gain a better insight into everyday life here.
You will be staying at a guesthouse in Dana Nature Reserve that is part of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature's WIld Jordan project. The projects revenue contributes to the sustainability of RSCNís protected areas and supports the socio economic development of local communities. The property was originally used to house researchers. The property has been designed to protect the nature and community of Dana Nature Reserve. The wonderful thing about this kind of interactive tourism is that everyone gains Ė the families financially and us with the wonderful welcome and experience they give us.
On Day 3, you will walk to the village of Rasun and Orjan. You will take part in a workshop at the Caligraphy House in Rasun and have a change to buy hand-made olive soap. You are contributing the local community in Rasun by putting money directly into the economy. At Orjan, you will have lunch with a local family in their home, tasting traditional dishes and discovering the food culture of Jordan. We believe this is best way to share stories and understand new cultures. The best way to share stories and meet new people is over a plate of great food and a glass of wine in hand. Supporting the local food industry in Jordan not only maintains the cultural identity of Iran and connects cultures through the most ancient of pastimes, eating!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Petra was vast and amazing. We first visited it by night (not included in trip) and then spent two long days walking round Petra, covering 15km each day. We were sorry when we turned our back to the Treasury for the last time.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book a couple of days to relax at the end at the Dead Sea. The holiday is great, but has some long days and early starts, and it was nice to be able to relax, swim and float in the Dead Sea at the end

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Our driver and guides were local and we had one lunch with a local family - though were surprised this was in a modern house rather than something more "local". Environmentally there was too much plastic - handed out in water bottles in the car (which we refused), large amounts in lunch boxes, and even in the local lunch with the family we were given water in single use plastic cups (foil sealed) and where we ate was covered with a single use plastic covering which was gathered up with the scraps at the end of the meal to be thrown away. We visited several nature reserves and hope the fees trickle down to help conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great holiday. A few issues with guides and hotels, but nothing major
