Austrian walking holiday

Description of Austrian walking holiday

This hiking holiday is hosted at MoaAlm, a unique, beautifully designed mountain house, situated high in the Austrian Alps.

With the focus on being ‘RelaxinglyActive’ the holidays we offer are a healthy balance of fresh air, mountain activities and great freshly cooked plant based food. A holiday at MoaAlm puts you right at the heart of our warm family atmosphere, with dedicated, enthusiastic staff, and a cosy but stylish living space.

HIKING:
Situated at 1800m, MoaAlm offers a superb base from which to explore the breathtaking mountains of East Tirol. We create a personalised holiday, giving you the opportunity to share our passion for the mountains, with daily guided hikes with a local guide. We aim to start the week with easier hikes, building up to some challenging mountain ascents later in the week.

FOOD:
We are passionate about healthy living and reducing our impact on the environment. Therefore included in your holiday are six three course evening meals which are entirely plant based. Our in house chef creates seasonal menus and our food is organic and as locally sourced as possible. We also offer a delicious, organic breakfast and freshly baked cakes with organic tea and coffee on a daily basis.

YOGA:
Every holiday with us includes five yoga classes in our in-house yoga studio with panoramic mountain views. Whenever the weather allows, we take our yoga practice outside to take advantage of the fresh mountain air. At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests’ needs in mind.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
If you would like an adrenaline rush, we can also arrange additional activities with our local partners, such as rafting, canyoning, paragliding and rock climbing.

ABOUT THE AREA
We are situated on the edge of the Hohe Tauren National Park underneath Austria's highest mountain, Großglockner. This means we have a unique opportunity to spot rare wildlife such as Ibex on an almost daily basis. Our local guide is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna around MoaAlm and will be able to tell you about the unique Alpine species you will see. Our local village Kals is still a traditional Alpine village, where many of the residents graze animals on the high alpine pastures. Kals is also home to a small ski resort and a few lovely traditional restaurants.

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Austrian walking holiday

Environment

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer, a fragile environment which it is our goal to protect.

We serve plant based, locally sourced organic food, and change our menu with the seasons to ensure we are creating as minimul impact on the environment as possible.

Recycling is also a major part of our waste disposal. We only send one bin bag of waste to landfill each season, and are aiming to reduce our plastic usage this year.

Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Natural materials have been used in the construction and renovation of MoaAlm where possible and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. The local tradesmen we employ are highly skilled, particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally-produced felt.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at locally-run recommended restaurants.

We offer a weekly yoga class and coffee morning for local residents.

We support local farmers in taking care of the forestry and the forest tracks around MoaAlm.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employ an international team of full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all good. The setting, the amazing views, the accommodation and the delicious food. I really enjoyed the yoga - a great start to the day. The walks were varied but all very good.
The people running Moa Alm are all lovely and very enthusiastic. Very helpful and flexible as well -especially when I changed my plans at the last minute

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Moa Alm is quite remote and the journey there from any of the airports can be quite long and convoluted by public transport

Do try the yoga even if you haven't done it before .

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Used local food in Moa Alm and also we had lunch at traditional mountain huts, when available

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience of being in such a beautiful place away from everything. We particularly enjoyed the hillwalking and climbing Figerhorn mountain
with the outstanding panorama on top including the Grosglockner. We had such a sense of achievement are getting to the summit. Our guides both
Barbara and Hubert made every effort to ensure that we had a most enjoyable and memorable holiday. Waking up to yoga every morning set me up for the
day so well. The food was also outstanding with local produce and also wild mushrooms form the forest in many of the dishes. There was so much attention
to detail and it all tasted so delicious inculding the Indonesian feast. Thankyou so much

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

To go out and see as much as you can of this beautiful area while you are there. It is such a special place but it is only through exploring its many valleys,
mountains, forests and villages that you feel the essence of this place.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It benefited the local restaurants which we went to daily while on our walks. Little hidden away places. We did everything in our local area with little use of
transport. Only using on our feet and lots of energy!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our holiday was so memorable and we have loads of beautiful photos to look back on for many years to come. There was such attention to detail in Moa Alm.
The whole experience was really personal we felt part of this place. We all ate together, walked together, laughed together and talked together. I highly
recommend it.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The absolutely superb location in a remote and largely unspoilt part of the Austrian Alps. Lots of lovely hiking routes in the vicinity as well as enough quiet enjoyment of the magnificent mountain scenery to warrant the description "Mountain Retreat".

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

-Don't go if really good cooking doesn't do anything for you! Everything the chef puts on the table is delicious and deserves to be appreciated.
- Do get up a bit early in the morning to join the yoga classes. Barbara will tailor them to your needs and abilities. Ask her to keep the music low if you don't like it!
- Despite the remote location - some 40 minutes' drive from the nearest town, Lienz - you can leave the car at home. Lienz is easily accessible by train and the hosts at MoaAlm will collect guests from the station.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Neither yes nor no; can't judge after just one week on a first visit. However, my feeling is that paragliding is not a conservationist practice....

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

See above, + The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, with stupendous views; the hosts are extremely flexible and attentive to guests as individuals; they themselves and the way days are structured help you to feel really comfortable in the group. In other words: TOPS! I even congratulate myself for finding and booking this holiday!!
