Description of Family holiday in Costa Rica

Neatly sandwiched between the Caribbean and Pacific oceans, Costa Rica has long been a draw for travellers looking to experience the very best of Central America and as this 15 day family holiday goes to prove there’s a heck of a lot to get excited about not least of all, the volcanoes.

Seismic activity has turned Costa Rica into, quite literally, a hot bed of thermal features and lush green landscapes with Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast and Manuel Antonio on the Pacific, showcasing a wealth of natural beauty and amazing tropical sites.

In relation to its size, Costa Rica has a higher percentage of protected natural parks and wildlife reserves than anywhere else on earth with a wealth of outdoor activities and endless organic adventures ensuring families are in their absolute element.

From fantastical birds and rare animal species to spending at least a couple of nights in family-friendly accommodation, some with swimming pools, this 16 day family holiday in Costa Rica ticks all the right boxes and allows for an easy going experience best suited to curious and active kids (min age 5).

Note: if you wish to go white water rafting on the Pacuare River, children need to be over 12.

Holiday type
This trip is for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip. Travelling our way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. Made up of 3-5 like-minded families, the kids tend to hit it off on these trips straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Our family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

On this trip: Our policy of staying in locally owned hotels, having local guides and group leaders and using transport owned and operated by local people wherever possible is continued in Costa Rica. Our small groups (approx. 16 people) have a minimal impact on the fragile environment. All tour guides are responsible for ensuring that the guests understand the nature of the environment that they are in and minimise the impact that they may have. For every person who travels with us to Costa Rica, a contribution is made to the Fundacion Neotropica, which protects the rainforest and educates people about conservation. Our local agent is committed to responsible travel. We employ local guides and leaders.

Responsible code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Giving something back: We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. You as a customer choose where these funds are used from a shortlist of nominated projects – so it really is YOUR foundation.

Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

As a company we aim to contribute to the environmental preservation of the destinations we visit and to reduce any negative impacts our operations may have. This translates to actions such as using local transport where safe to do so in order to reduce emissions, observing all national and marine park visitor rules and operating a ‘take in, take back out’ waste management system, to name but a few examples. Through our inhouse foundation we also invest money into environmental initiatives that benefit the planet, including restoring kelp forests to help reverse the effects of global warming and protecting endangered species such as sea turtles and elephants.
