Description of Northern Lights yoga holiday

Come along and pick up new experiences on an easy-going yoga tour from Inari to Rovaniemi! If we are lucky, we might also see northern lights dancing on he northern sky.

Lake Inari is the third biggest lake of Finland, which is also called the sea of Lapland. After getting a short briefing on the Sámi culture at Sámi museum Siida we'll take a boat tour to the Ukko island, one of the wholy places of the indigenous Sámi people. If weather is favorable to us, we'll have a hatha yoga session outdoors. At the hotel lakeside sauna is waiting for us.

In the evening we'll have dinner together at the 8th best restaurant in Finland, the Aanaar restaurant of hotel Kultahovi. Seasonal 3-course Inari menu will be served.

Night in an aurora cabin might be the experience of a lifetime, if northern lights show up. In the end of August nights are already dark enough so northern lights can be seen. Another night in the very beautiful Inari Wilderness hotel has been counted in a standard room, which also is new and very comfortable.

Kiilopää is the highest hill top in the Saariselkä are, 546m. You can get on top by climbing stairs up to see breathtaking views to the Nattas fell. There are also 3km and 6km trails available. Everyone can choose their own path and end up to the smoke sauna to have yoga and sauna.

After the sauna we'll continue our tour to Tankavaara, where we first have delicious food and stay overnight in funny Lappsih style gold digger's cabins with shower in a separate building. Should this feel too plain for you, there are also normal holiday apartments available.

Vuotso is the next village south from Tankavaara and there we'll meet a Sámi artista, teacher and hostess of a reindeer farm Tuula-Maija Magga-Hetta, who has grounded a Sámi gallery in her parent's old house.

Tuula-Maija will tell about her culture in her own lively way. We might end up singing in traditional Sámi way or making life triangles, who knows.
Päivi Romo is an sertified SJL® yoga teacher, who will travel with you and practise yoga with you. Her sessions are gentle hatha yoga. The exercises will influence on you body, muscles and nerve system. Hatha yoga is easy and might seem like a combination of breathing exercises and gentle streching but it is possible to increase your muscle power also in this very safe way. Each day you will have a yoga session in a different location, on an island, in sauna premises and in the Sámi gallery.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Northern Lights yoga holiday

All the three hotels recycle glass, PET bottles, cans and paper. As the distances are long in Lapland it is not sensible to recycle bio waste. The towels are changed daily only on client request. One of the hotels uses geo-thermal heating.
Food served in the hotel is as local as possible. Local fish, berries and mushrooms are used. Reindeer herding is the local source of livelihood. Reindeers live free in tundra and eat lichen from nature. Reindeer meat is as pure and ecological as meat can be.

Our partners taking guests to the wilderness pay special attention to protecting nature. No garbage is left behind.
We want our guests to learn to value silence. Therefore we have included yoga sessions in three very different locations, on an island, in sauna by river and in Sámi gallery. We'll also hike up on an Arctic hill. Many of us do not even understand how total silence feels as in cities it is never really silent.

The route has been planned so that the group is able to use public buses for moving from one place to another so even a small group can move ecologically.

All the three hotels in Lapland are privately owned and run by local families and use as many local services as possible in serving their guests.
Our guests will get an introduction to the local Sámi culture by a guided visit at the Sámi museum Siida. They will be told about the life of these indigenous people, their life in the Arctic circumstances and their holy places. We'll make a boat tour to the holy island of Ukko on lake Inari.
We'll visit a local sámi woman , who is a teacher, an artista and a hostess of a reindeer farm. In our workshop we'll learn more Sámi traditions and either try ther way of singing or prepare triangles of life by using local materials.
In Tankavaara we'll stay overnight in traditional gold digger style cabins.
Guests come here to enjoy silence and admire the night light show. No negative side-effects are caused to the local community as our guests will enjoy the beauty of the nature.
