Description of Italy walking holiday, Sibillini National Park

Between Umbria and the Marche, in the heart of Italy, the Mount Sibillini National Park is a landscape of sweeping plains and soaring mountains, with a fascinating mix of topography, wildlife and local food, all perfect for exploring on a walking holiday. Here, you may begin by strolling through rolling hills, moving inland away from the Adriatic coast, but soon a dramatic volcanic massif rears up in front of you. This is the start of the magical Sibillini Mountains, a chain that towers over the Umbria-Marche Apennines. The territory may seem bleak at first, but gives way to rich colour from thousands of beautiful wild flowers, including poppies and cornflowers, that create blankets of blue, red and yellow. You will be walking a landscape roamed by wolves and wild cats, while overhead, peregrine falcons and golden eagles soar.

Comprised of approximately 70,000 hectares and 18 municipalities and the setting for many ancient legends, the Mount Sibillini National Park provides a fascinating setting for this trekking tour – come and create your own adventure story and take some tales home!

Carefully selected local guides, who have a deep knowledge of the landscape, flora and fauna, will lead you and, in addition to wonderful walking, there are lots of special and interactive activities, too. Visit the Hermitage of San Leonardo and meet the hermit, Father Pietro, tuck into delicious organic cheese at a local dairy, nibble some of the local salumi, as well as taking on one of the most challenging and exciting treks in the region, climbing from the Forca di Presta to the Valley of Lake Pilato (1,949 m) and the peak of Mount Vettore (2,476 m).

This is a small group holiday, to minimise impact on the environment, and we have carefully chosen the accommodation based on its energy sourcing, consumption and commitment to local food suppliers – all important factors in the preservation of this wild and beautiful region. This is a five-night tour, with two nights in a characterful inn and three in a typical farmhouse, all on a half-board basis.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Italy walking holiday, Sibillini National Park

Environment

Rather than classic itineraries, we always choose routes that offer our clients unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that match our commitment to environmental sustainability. By doing so, we provide travelers the opportunity to experiment and explore lesser-known territories in an educational and fun way, without harm to the ecosystems of indigenous flora and fauna.

This incredible trekking tour consists of special and interactive activities, such as a visit to the Hermitage of San Leonardo where you will meet the hermit, Father Pietro; an organic cheese tasting at a local dairy; a tasting of local salumi; and one of the most challenging and exciting treks in the Mount Sibillini National Park. Our insistence on small group-sizes guarantees a low impact on the environment, as do your accommodations which have been carefully selected based on their energy sourcing, consumption and commitment to local food suppliers, important factors in the preservation of this wild and beautiful region.

Community

This trekking tour takes place amidst the verdant plains and sparse mountains of the Marche region and offers a great diversity of wildlife, topography and local food. Each day you will be accompanied by a naturalistic guide native to the area, enabling you to learn firsthand the nuances, history and unique topography of this territory, a place of many ancient myths and legends, as well as trek to marvelous destinations that you would never discover on your own.

We carefully select local guides who we know are committed to developing the local economy, so that the money from tourism stays in the region and benefits the small communities along your route. Even the accommodations on this trip are in typical locally-run farmhouses or inns, which are certainly more sustainable than a more modern starred hotel, and will also offer you the best opportunity to interact directly with the wonderful local people of this sacred place.
