If mountain biking is your passion then you’ll love this thrilling four-day small group tour in Finnish Lapland, during which a knowledgeable local guide will lead you on a two-wheeled exploration of Kaldoaivi, the country’s largest wilderness area. With departures in August and September, you stand a good chance of seeing the spectacular Northern Lights too, especially as you’ll be staying in remote cabins a long distance from civilisation. Good physical fitness and mountain biking experience are necessary for this trip, as the landscape offers plenty of challenge as well as breathtaking views. You’ll tackle demanding ascents, smoother highlands, deep river valleys and Arctic hills as you follow your guide for four days, with daily distances up to 65km.
In the evenings you’ll unwind in cabins with saunas, at least 25km from the nearest settlement and with only intermittent phone coverage – blissful isolation. You’ll need your own sleeping bag and helmet, bikes can be hired if you’d rather not bring your own. Meals are also included. Come prepared for the weather too – although this is the best time of year to go mountain biking in Finnish Lapland, in this part of the world temperatures can range from 10 to -12°C in August.
You will be accompanied throughout by an experienced wilderness guide, and your luggage will be transported ahead of you as you travel point to point. This is a beast of a mountain biking holiday and one that takes you far, far from the beaten track.

This is a cycle tour so only muscle power is used for getting around on tundra although some transportation by car is needed. When moving in tundra we try not to cause any harm to the flora or fauna. The local wilderness guide will teach practical tricks for surviving in the wilderness.
We'll not use linen but a sleeping bag and clean the wilderness cabin by ourselves in order to avoid extra driving. The area where we are cycling is called Kaldoaivi wilderness area and it is not part of any National Park.
We hope to eat local wild food: berries, mushroom, fish and reindeer meat.
The Impacts of this Trip
All services are provided by local companies. Timing chosen is ideal not only for mountain biking but also for the local tourism as it is between the fishing season ending on the 20th of August and hunting season starting from the 10th of August so we are filling in accommodation capacity. In addition to giving work for a local wilderness guide, we also use the services of two local transportation companies and two local holiday villages.
In order to give the group an understanding of the area and the living there, the tour will begin by a visit to Siida museum of Sámi culture together with the wilderness guide. They will hear about the 8 seasons, way of living in the Arctic as well as flora and fauna. They will hear about reindeer herding, later they will see reindeer herds on tundra and have a chance to visit a reindeer farm.
