Responsible tourism: Easter in Guatemala tailor made tour

Environment

We understand that travel and tourism can both benefit and harm the environment, the economy, the social structure, culture and communities in any country. As a company we love Latin America and strive to protect the rural and urban landscapes which we take you to visit. As members of AITO, we are committed to AITO’s Sustainable Tourism Guidelines, which means that we ensure that environmental and cultural demands are kept as low as possible.

We also work with local operators which have a proven record in training guides to set a good example in their respect for their surroundings and pass on advice and encouragement to visitors on how to preserve the fragile environment in simple ways, such as by refilling a water bottle, disposing of rubbish responsibly, not disturbing local communities or wildlife and not purchasing items made from endangered animals or plants.

When selecting accommodation, we give preference to hotel and lodges which have a verifiable commitment to eco-friendly practices. On the shores of tranquil Lake Petén, nearby the majestic Mayan site of Tikal, you will stay at Villa Maya lodge. The company behind the lodge – Villas de Guatemala – is committed to the implementation of better environmental practices and conservation.

On this trip, you will visit several protected sites, including Lake Atitlán, which is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, as well as Tikal National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage protected site. Several projects are set up in these areas to protect the environment, including the protection of drink water sources projects at Lake Atitlán and environmental monitoring, conservation management and education projects at Tikal National Park.

Community

As a company we support the LATA Foundation, who runs social and environmental projects throughout the continent. Currently, the foundation runs several of such projects in Guatemala, including several health and nutrition programmes that cover education, as well as the provision of the necessary supplies to make local communities self-sufficient.

What’s more, we pride ourselves on delivering our clients truly authentic and unforgettable experiences in Latin America which connect travellers with the people whose country they visit. On this tour, you will attend the Easter processions in Antigua, visit the traditional town and market of Chichicastenango, as well as Santiago Atitlán: the largest of the lake communities, with a strong indigenous identity. We encourage you to purchase items from the local markets and shops and visit locally owned restaurants and bars during this tour. Guatemala is known for its colourful textiles, clothes and tapestries, as well as handcrafted masks and good-quality leather goods, which can be bought at several of the places you will visit on this tour. This all together will give you the opportunity to gain a unique insight into the daily life in Guatemala. You will support the local economy and promote the culture of the country at the same time.

Our expert guides are on hand to provide advice on the best way to communicate with the local community, what and what not to buy, as well as explaining the importance of giving gifts responsibly, and acting in a respectful way while taking photographs.
