Description of 10 day Antarctica holiday

This Antarctica holiday starts and ends in Ushuaia in Patagonia, where you board the Ocean Atlantic, a small ice-class expedition ship with 118 ensuite cabins and plenty of outdoor space as well as its own zodiacs for further exploration of the Antarctic landscapes and wildlife. The trip opens with a bit of a challenge, crossing the legendary Drake Passage which is long and sometimes tough on the stomach. However, you have a well deserved treat at the other end as you emerge into the landscapes of the Great White Continent.

We have four full days exploring Antarctica’s waters, wildlife and wilderness following a route chosen by your skipper, with highlights including Lemaire Channel, Deception Island, Paradise Bay, Neko harbour and Shetland Islands. There will be unforgettable sights of giant mountain ranges, glaciers and icebergs as well as many wildlife watching opportunities, with penguins, seals, albatrosses and maybe even whales if you are lucky.

On this trip accommodation is in shared double cabins but do chat with us about solo supplements as this will depend on availability. We include the use of an expedition parka, as well as lectures and guiding from our expert Antarctica guides along the way.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: 10 day Antarctica holiday

A trip to the Antarctic is a completely different experience and quite unlike any other trip you have probably been on. We use a highly regulated, licensed vessel which is well equipped to operate in this vulnerable ecosystem. We are fully compliant with all rules set down by the IAATO. We carefully select all ships we work with and choose them for their small size as this creates far less impact on shore landings with wildlife. We view the voyage to the Antarctic as an expedition, not a sightseeing trip. Smaller boats such as ours can navigate narrow waterways, and are far less polluting than the larger ships in Antarctic waters. By carrying less passengers, we have far less waste, and all waste is carried back to the home port to allow for environmentally conscious waste management and disposal, unlike some of the larger ships which do not facilitate this.

We are regulated by very strict conditions and codes of conduct, and we take our responsibility seriously. We are currently working towards supporting a nominated wildlife charity which operates in Antarctica and we have a long term commitment to maintaining its pristine condition while still offering some of the best value trips to this unique destination.

We really work hard to keep all our operations green! All our worldwide offices currently run on 90% green energy (we are working towards 100%) from hydro electric and wind to solar power. Being web based, we are close to becoming a paperless environment. Brochure prints are at a minimum (and printed on a requirement basis) and all pre departure information is electronically distributed. We use energy saving bulbs in our work centres, and recycle all our waste. Our pre-departure pack provides you with all the information required for your tour, from what to take with you to practical advice on how to minimize your impact on the Antarctic environment. This pack highlights initiatives such as waste reduction, and how to appropriately engage with wildlife and the environment around you.

This trip begins in Ushuaia where you will have time to sample local food and shop at local boutiques which we encourage individuals to take part in for experience and in supporting of the local community.

We currently work with 3 different charities, giving us a broad spectrum and diversifying where our money goes. We work with Project Peru in the UK who run an orphanage in Zapallal in the shanty town outskirts of Lima, ANIA in Peru which is a high profile Peruvian NGO working with children and helps to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it affectively.

We also corroborate with foundations in Australia whom work on several development projects in Latin America and around the world. We help these charities by fundraising treks, donations as a company. through our clients and through many of our customers who volunteer their time and expertise. These charities are close to our core of supporting the environment and children in need.
