Description of Austria activity holiday, Climb the Grossglockner

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

This Austria activity holiday is pretty unique, as we train and guide keen mountain climbers up to the top of Mount Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak. Over seven days, based at our mountain chalet at the foot of Grossglockner, we build up gradually to the ascent, which is to 3797m. We also include some general hikes and mountain biking in the itinerary, so this is a great holiday for anyone who enjoys experiencing the mountains on two wheels and on two feet!

The Grossglockner is a challenging but manageable summit, however some mountaineering experience and a good level of fitness is required. The average climbing pace on this trip is about 400m per hour and be prepared for some vertiginous spots along the way. This is not an ascent for someone with a fear of heights!

Mountaineering course & expedition:

You will receive a concise alpine training over the week, including the use of crampons, ropes and ice techniques, as well as safety and rescue training. As part of this training, we will climb at least one other local summit. We are surrounded by stunning peaks over 3000m. The actual expedition takes place on day five, weather conditions depending of course. But this holiday takes place during summer months, so we usually don’t have any issues. We spread the ascent over two days, the first one with a four hour trek to Stüdl Hütte mountain hut, where we spend the night. The next day we undertake the summit in groups of three people per guide. We descend back down to base at our chalet on the same day as the ascent.

Our chalet and guesthouse is in a stunning location, not only in the shadow of Grossglockner at an elevation of 1800m but also in the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria. We take a maximum of twelve guests staying in six ensuite rooms. We pride ourselves on our hearty, healthy mountain food, sourcing as much as possible from our local mountain community. We also have plenty of communal spaces to relax in, one of the favourites being the sunny terrace with mountain views.

The price of this holiday includes: Accommodation, breakfasts, dinners, guided hikes and biking, mountain guides, climbing equipment and transfer from Lienz train station, Salzburg Airport or Innsbruck Airport.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Austria activity holiday, Climb the Grossglockner

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer. MoaAlm is only accessible with our own vehicle or by foot. We will provide pick up and drop off on arrival/departure to your vehicle or your airport transfer in Lienz. Hiking and walking is how we get around - far more suited to our goal of enjoying and preserving the natural beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike - guests will be encouraged to take all waste away with them and will be shown the importance of keeping the mountain pristine. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in the EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

We believe that food tastes best when it has been grown close to home. All our food is fresh and will be sourced locally where possible. And we are in luck - our region provides amazing produce such as bread, cheese and chocolate!

No one knows the mountains better than the people who grew up there! We work together with the local community of mountain guides to provide certain activities that require extensive knowledge and experience such as rock climbing, rafting, tour skiing, and paragliding.

In and around the village of Kals there are some excellent restaurants. Our guests will eat out at a local recommended restaurant on one of the evenings. If the guests choose to go on a day-trip, they might also eat out in parts of the region East Tirol, such as Lienz or Hallstadt.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally-produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.
