Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

On this particular tour, travelers will enjoy the variety of highlights that Northern Brazil has to offer: Lencois Maranhenses National Park, Jercoacoara and the coastal area of. Fernando de Noronha. We make every effort to maintain sustainable travel practices no matter which attraction is being visited. We operate under 'Leave no Trace' principles, which include minimizing environmental impact in all places visited.

For instance, the lodging chosen for this holiday is selected based on particular establishments’ commitment to environmental and cultural conservation.
This particular tour, has travelers traveling by foot to explore different areas. The town of Jericoacoara does not allow cars to enter the town, making this a quiet and pristine area to spend time. By not allowing vehicles in the city, Jericoacoara is committed protecting the environment and surrounding coast line by limiting its carbon emissions. Accommodations in Fernando de Noronha are also focused on environmental friendly practices. The Beco de Noronha Pousada, was built using recycled materials and each apartment was designed to use as much natural light as possible. The owner uses recycled bottles for the development of "Faceless Dolls" which are handicrafts made of paper mache.

We also do our part in protecting this amazing destination. All of our travelers are educated on the "Do's and Don'ts" of responsible travel and the best ways to actively participate in safeguarding local ecosystems and cultures. Our tour group size is always limited to a maximum of 12 travelers in order to minimize local impact on the environment. Our local guides and our travelers are all versed in the principles of “Leave No Trace”, as well.

We are also a proud member of TOPS, Tour Operators Promoting Sustainability, which is comprised of tour operators that share the common objectives of conserving threatened landscapes and providing livelihoods for the local people in their destinations. By joining TOPS, we have committed to improving the sustainability of our own practices as well as those of our local suppliers. The desired result is increased sustainability throughout every facet of the tour operation process. Hotels are motivated to operate conscientiously, guides adhere to sustainable tourism practices, and travelers are made aware that their vacation has an impact. Only a few North American tour operators belong to TOPS, so it is an honor to be recognized as an active participant.

The Impacts of this Trip

We have designed our holidays to utilize existing infrastructure whenever possible in order to support the people of the regions in which we operate. Locally owned transportation companies typically provide all the transfers provided in our itineraries. However, we do occasionally use public transport when it is logistically sound or adds to the sense of adventure! Employing these local services generates funds that are poured directly into local communities.

For this particular vacation, travelers will stay in cottages located in small fishing villages along the coast, thereby supporting the local community. For example, The Vila Bela Vista in Jericoacoara is a family owned bed and breakfast that also houses one of the oldest gardens in the area.

To continually support the communities and sustain the environments in our trip destinations, we initiated a grant program. Through our financial assistance, several different initiatives have been made possible. A few of these projects include reforestation and home restoration in the Andes, sponsoring a Christmas fiesta at an orphanage in Costa Rica, giving a Guatemalan school needed building materials, supplying plumbing and irrigation at a historic hacienda in Bolivia with a proper well system, and providing first-aid and hospitality training for one of our Amazon lodges in Ecuador. By traveling as with us, you help support these initiatives directly!
