Description of Winter tailor-made holiday in Finland

Enjoy a winter escape to Finnish Lapland, on this holiday that captures the essence of this unique part of the world. You can pick and choose from the top traditional and most exciting experiences, tailoring this trip to suit your family and friends.

You will be based in Harriniva, more than 230km north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Finnish Lapland. Your base is the Harriniva Wilderness Hotel, owned and run by the Pietikäinen family, and you have complete freedom to create your own itinerary, deciding how to spend each wonderful day. Choose from our range of activities, special nights and little extras to get the right balance of action and relaxation.

A husky safari tends to be on everyone’s list, snowmobiling is an unbeatable thrill, and a reindeer encounter is really special, too. You can head out cross-country skiing and snowshoe through the snowy landscape, visit the small town of Muonio (around 4km away) or enjoy some ‘me’ time at the Aurora Wellness Centre, where spa treatments can be arranged. Our experienced wilderness guides will teach you the skills you need for each activity and outing, and can fill you in on Lappish life, past and present.

Night-time safaris in search of the Northern Lights are another must-do and Harriniva is a prime location for spotting the Aurora. Feel free to join the hopeful watch every night of your stay, if you wish. How about a night in a snow igloo or an unforgettable Aurora Dome?

Harriniva is a perfect destination that has it all. Everything you need is included in this trip: flights, transfers, en-suite hotel room, half board meals, and winter clothing for the duration of your stay. Simply choose the duration of your holiday (a minimum of three nights is included in the price) and then select the activities which you would like to take part in from the weekly activity schedule. Just bear in mind that some activities require a minimum number of participants to operate, schedules are always subject to change and are subject to availability.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Winter tailor-made holiday in Finland

Our local partner’s guides are trained to minimise our impact on the environment while supporting the guest’s experience. Guides practice ‘Leave No Trace’ principles on the trail. We also recycle whenever possible in all the regions we travel.

When planning and creating new activities and itineraries the most environmentally friendly transport methods are always considered and we use the smallest vehicle possible for each transfer therefore minimising pollution from larger vehicles wherever possible. Journeys for airport transfers or activities are also always combined to reduce the number of journeys for each itinerary.

The huge growth in tourism and service provision has been developed in conjunction with a long-term sustainable tourism plan with one of the primary objectives being to maintain nature in its natural state while guaranteeing the traditional way of life.

Much of this has been achieved along with membership of EU development programmes, aimed at diversifying sources of livelihood, effective usage of resources and to increase export.

Promoting entrepreneurship, ongoing re-education of the workforce and development of the educational system to suit the needs of enterprises is continuing. The target is to diversify the sources of livelihood, increase the value of refinement production and develop new enterprises particularly in the area of tourism. National measures as well as EU-programme measures support this objective.

Local employment in the traditional industries of Finnish Lapland such as Forestry has been slowly declining. In 1950 the largest part of Lapland’s inhabitants lived in rural areas and more than half the workforce worked in forestry and agriculture. By 1997 approximately a quarter of Lapland’s 100 000 workforce was unemployed. Today the main source of employment and income is within the industries dependent upon tourism such as the restaurant and accommodation services with 65 % of the workforce being in the service industry, 22 % in processing and 10 % in primary production.

This economic turn is particularly noticeable in the small, relatively unknown region of Finnish Lapland and working within this growth industry in rural and remote areas means that we must take a great deal of responsibility; socially, environmentally and economically. We fully appreciate the impact of tourist visits on local communities and their residents and strive to ensure that we are having a positive effect.

We embrace this philosophy, employing local activity providers and using only locally owned hotels. The Harriniva Wilderness hotel is situated in the heart of Lapland near the remote town of Muonio and has been employing the local community for over 30 years.

In this manner we help to maintain jobs in an area where unemployment was, until recently, very high. Additionally, the use of local suppliers ensures that the tourism spend filters through to local economies via the tourism multiplier effect.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Loved it all. Easy to get to but still feels remote.
X country skiing, huskie dog and of course seeing the northern lights.
losge staff are great and the leaders excellent. Good level of risk management and felt safe trying new activities.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We stayed in the lodge which was convenient as you don't need to ' dress' to go to breakfast etc.

Avoid room 101, it is next to the boot room and can be noisy before and after activities, although it only happens a few times a day. Also ask for a room facing the woods, much nicer outlook.

Give everything a go. I had only ever skied 1 time 20 years ago, loved it.

Be prepare not to see the northern Lights and feel lucky when you do.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Tourism is important to this region.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. It is a long way from Australia and expensive, but worth it all
for such a wonderful experience.
