Description of Great Bear Rainforest sailing cruise, Canada

This Great Bear Rainforest sailing cruise holiday is one of the most magnificent ways to explore this wildlife rich region of British Columbia, Canada. The Great Bear Rainforest is part of the Coast Range Mountains and covers more than 64,000 square kilometres, with temperate rainforest meeting the coast which means that sailing along it and anchoring beside it allows great access to some of its remote shores.

This nine day sailing cruise holiday brings you into inlets and islands that are not only home to some of the earth’s most ancient forests but also to prolific salmon, bears, including the famous spirit bear or Kermode bear, sea otters and whales. On board our sailing boat you will have a chance to study, photograph and look on in awe of all these aspects of the Great Bear Rainforest.

During this holiday we drop anchor and get a chance to visit several coastal First Nations communities who not only have a fascinating cultural heritage but have also been stewards of these great forests and wildlife habitats for thousands of years. Wildlife sightings will, hopefully, include grizzly bears foraging along the shores of dramatic inlets, but also spirit and black bears lying in wait for salmon in well known spawning spots along our route.

We shall take excursions away from the sailing vessel on sea kayaks, inflatable skiffs or on foot, so that we can learn more about the wildlife on land too, including wolves, and how critical their existence and survival is to the ecosystems and local communities.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Great Bear Rainforest sailing cruise, Canada

Environment

Our mission is to contribute to the conservation and well-being of the ecosystems, cultures and communities of the Pacific coast of Canada. We believe that helping our guests experience first-hand and understand some of the most spectacular wildlife and ecosystems on the Planet is key to their protection and preservation. Our Founder and President holds a PhD in Marine Ecosystem Ecology, and has dedicated his career and expertise to providing exceptional travel experiences that foster awareness and stewardship.

At the heart of our company is a desire to reduce our footprint on the Planet. As such, we integrate responsible ecotourism practices into our daily activities. We source and serve foods that are locally and sustainably grown, produced, raised or caught. We design itineraries that allow us to spend more time sailing in order to reduce our fuel consumption. Our onboard recycling and composting programs help to divert waste from landfills. Our promotional materials and transactions are mainly done over the Internet, and when necessary we use 100% recycled post consumer paper, saving trees, water, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy.

In 2015 we underwent a strict assessment with Green Tourism Canada, and received a GOLD rating! Green Tourism was one of the world’s first sustainable tourism certification programs and it remains highly respected today because of its comprehensive assessments. While many sustainable certification programs allow businesses to submit self-assessments, Green Tourism Canada certified businesses are assessed on-site by trained, third-party auditors who review everything from efficiencies to food sources.

In recognition of our achievement in responsible and sustainable travel, we were awarded the 2015 Tourism Vancouver Island Award for Sustainable Tourism, and the 2015 Canadian Tourism Award for Sustainable Tourism.

Community

In each of the communities we visit, we partner with local people, communities, and organizations. We have protocol agreements with First Nations whose territories we visit, and work with hire local guides and businesses whenever possible. We partner with parks, conservation areas and governments and obtain permits for all limited-use areas we visit.

In 2015, our travel company was certified as “Carbon Neutral” by Offsetters and Synergy Enterprises. A third of our offset funds go towards supporting the Great Bear Rainforest Carbon Project. This project is the first of its kind in North America, balancing human well-being and ecological integrity through carbon finance. The Great Bear Rainforest Carbon Project is unique in that it is the only Improved Forest Management Project of its scale that has equal involvement by First Nations and the Provincial Government, strong legal and policy foundations, and robust data to support the quantification of ecosystem services. This project was of particular importance for us to support. With the Great Bear Rainforest being one of the key areas where we operate our expeditions, we are able to proudly take our guests into the communities and areas that our funds are contributing to support.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing the bears - we were quite close to the Black bear. Also the Grizzly Bears
especially the mum with her three young cubs along with this is the boat , the
environment and the peace and quiet - apart from the noise of nature. The
Humpback whales were fantastic. The crew on the boat brilliant - our naturalist so knowledgeable and our chef was amazing - no junk food there.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It is a rainforest so you need strong waterproof clothes that do the job As the
norwegians say - there is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothes Dress to keep warm and dry.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely as the project contributes to the good of the people and their work in
conserving the Great Bear Rainforest and its wildlife. We met a chief in waiting and visited the Big House which also helped me understand the role that the First Nation People were playing in conserving this area

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It exceeded my expectations in all ways and it was so good to know I was contributing to a conservation programme that was helping the First Nation People and the wildlife there.
