Description of Austria activity holiday, hiking, snowshoeing & yoga

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'

This week long Austria activity holiday is a small group tour, fully guided, during the months of December to April. Ours is a family run business, and you will be staying in our renovated mountain farmhouse and chalet in Kals am Grossglockner in the East Tirol. From here, the views out across the Hohe Tauern National Park, home to Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak are second to none. The mountain itself is a place of great local legend and of course, beauty rising to an elevation of 3,798m and is surrounded by hundreds of peaks over 3000m.

We propose the itinerary below for this week of winter activities, but we believe in adapting our adventures according to the interests and needs of our small group. And also to the weather conditions, of course. However, our passion is the mountains and we love nothing more than to share this with our guests, taking you on guided snowshoeing trips, cross country skiing, some winter walking and then daily yoga sessions, in our bespoke studio.

We also offer yoga retreats in this space during other times of the year, so that will give you an idea about our peaceful and life enhancing ethos. Our yoga teacher practises Vinyasa Flow yoga and Restorative yoga, and beginners of all ages are more than welcome. To complement this, we always ensure that our guests enjoy fine, home made, locally sourced and healthy food.

We can sleep 12-18 guests and welcome people of all ages. Each room has a view of the mountains and an ensuite bathroom. There are great views from our terrace and shared living space where we also congregate for meals. We have a bar with cold beers and other local specialities.

Please note that although we offer plenty of outdoor winter activities, we also recognise that guests want to rest too. You don’t need to be experienced winter sports people, or adrenaline seekers, but simply have a love of the crisp outdoors. Winter activities do involve ascents and descents, however, so please note that knee injuries may prevent participation in some activities such as cross country skiing. Of course, these activities are optional and if you would rather relax and do your own thing, that is fine with us too.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

No Snow?
Our holidays are all about looking at the options of exploring the mountains daily to best suit the weather conditions. We have a indoor yoga space for morning classes and everyday we offer an alternative to piste skiing. We offer daily snowshoe hiking or winter hikes, dependent on conditions. We also offer cross country skiing, which is weather permitting and not reliant on snow making facilities.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Austria activity holiday, hiking, snowshoeing & yoga

Environment

MoaAlm, where we stay, is situated at 1800m and is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer. It is only accessible with our own vehicle or by foot/snowshoe or ski. We will provide pick up and drop off on arrival/departure to your vehicle or your airport transfer in Lienz. Daily transport will involve a combination of snowshoe, ski and toboggan - far more suited to our goal of enjoying and preserving the natural beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike or ski touring trip - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel.

Given our surroundings, we are very conscious of the need to preserve natural beauty and heat as efficiently, and sustainably, as possible. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at local recommended restaurants.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink and will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employing a team of 4 full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will be also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Snow shoeing through the forest in knee deep snow and sitting in the hot tub under the stars.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You can build up a lot of heat cross country skiing and hiking so take thinner layers for milder days as well as the usual insulated ski gear. Don't forget your
swimming costume for the hot tub! The scenery is beautiful so if you enjoy photography take your camera.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The food was locally sourced and I felt the team were conscious of reducing energy waste - lights were always switched off, napkins reused, everything
recycled etc.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We enjoyed every aspect of our week at MoaAlm from start to finish. The chalet sits secluded on the mountainside and the team take you up and down in a
4x4 with snow chains. You can rodel down or walk down (and up!) if you prefer! Consequently you feel totally submerged in the winter landscape and nature
and the night sky is unspoilt. The yoga studio looks onto the mountains and we got to enjoy the sun rising during our morning practices led by Rosy and Polly
- the classes were a wonderful way to start the day. I have some yoga experience (my partner less so) and there was something for both of us in the classes. The food was delicious and plentiful - freshly baked cake awaits you every afternoon and we had a three course vegetarian feast every evening . We aren't vegetarian at home and very much enjoyed this aspect. There's plenty of opportunity to eat out at lunch times if you want to try the local fare, which tends to be less vegetarian. A range of activities is on offer - cross country skiing, hiking, snow shoeing, rodeling (equipment provided) and you can also downhill
ski/snowboard if you like (ski rental and lift pass obviously extra but no more expensive than other resorts we've been to). The resort was relatively quiet with no queues for the lifts. Martin, our Austrian guide, made a daily plan according to our preferences and weather report. It was our first time cross country skiing. I think the flexibility and variety that MoaAlm offers is unique and one of it's many strengths. If you feel tired, visibility is poor or the mood takes you you can relax at the chalet with a book instead. I feel this holiday is very much what you want to make it and there's no pressure to follow a particular itinerary. The 'relaxingly active' ethos describes our week perfectly - we chose to do plenty of physical activity but felt mentally recharged and indulged in the food and evening bar. The hot tub is quite an experience amongst the snow under the stars! The team were incredibly welcoming and a pleasure to be with. We couldn't recommend this holiday more and we are seriously considering returning this summer to explore more of the local hiking paths that are inaccessible in winter.

Read the operator's response here:

We really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a detailed report of your time here and are thrilled to see that you are considering a return here in the summer season... we would love to see you! Best wishes and thanks again, Polly x

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I honestly cannot recommend MoaAlm enough! As a solo traveller, I am always interested in new challenges and visiting places that are off the beaten-tourist track. Thank you so much to Hubert, Barbara, Oscar and Martin for making me feel part of the MoaAlm family and for the most unforgettable week packed with snowshoeing, hiking, cross country skiing, sledding, yoga, and total food
gustation! Though I'm a regular hiker, I'm an absolute rookie at snow sports. But was not an issue, with them willing to take the time to explain to me how to use the equipment before we started off on our adventure. They take special care with attention to detail, and loved that they tailor your holiday based around what you decided you want to do the night before. And there's heaps you can
do! Also dietary requirements are no issue, with the chef Oscar whipping up heavenly dishes for your tastebuds. The communal dining is another plus, allowing you to socialise and get to know your hosts and other guests.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you're not too tired from the day before's activities, spend at least one morning watching the sun rise over the mountains - spectacular!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. MoaAlm isn't very touristy are so it brings in money to locally run businesses. Also MoaAlm sources the majority of the food it serves locally and has installed Eco-friendly insulation and solar panels to cut down on their carbon emissions.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Thanks again for the laughs and treasured memories. I had a super relaxing week outdoors enjoying the sunshine and snow with unforgettable views over Grossglockner, the Alps and the Dolomites. Can not recommend this place enough to anyone looking for something special away from the crowds. Definitely a highlight in my trip. In a word, this place was phenomenal
