Description of Venezuela holiday, 18 day itinerary

This Venezuela holiday is a spectacular three week, small group tour, starting and ending in Caracas. With the help of some domestic flights we take you on a journey around many of the country’s most spectacular landscapes, in a country where over 40 per cent of them have protected status, and yet it is strangely still very much off the mass tourism trail.

We are very proud of the itinerary that we have created, which coversthe Andean peaks to Los Llanos tropical grasslands, Orinoco Delta to the great Angel Falls which tumble almost 1km from the Gran Sabana region's largest tepui or tableland, Auyan-tepui.

We spend plenty of time at two of the country’s most splendid national parks. First, Parque Nacional Mochima on the Caribbean coast, where we enjoy a boat trip, snorkelling and lots of swimming. Then inland to Cueva de Guacharo National Park where a massive 10km limestone cave is centrepiece as well as its residents oilbirds which exit en masse at dusk, making quite a sight. And sound.

Another wonderful evening event that we get to witness, hopefully, is at Catacumbo famous for having an almost daily lightning storm. This natural phenomenon, Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo, creates an average of 260 dramatic storm days per year.

Venezuela is brimming with fascinating culture, one aspect of which you will learn about when we meet the indigenous Warao people while exploring their homelands on the Orinoco Delta. Just one of many adventures on this Venezuela holiday, a country which is still wonderfully un-touristy but brimming with secret and unforgettable marvels.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Venezuela holiday, 18 day itinerary

Environment

We have a strict environmental policy to make sure that the environments we visit are not damaged or spoilt in any way. Our “Leave No Trace” ethic is applied to this trip and as tour operators, it is something we are careful to promote. Your guide on this trip will have been trained to uphold this policy and all clients are fully briefed on appropriate/responsible behaviour whilst in wilderness areas.

We are very aware of the economic, ecological and ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures and fragile environments. We realise that taking clients through this region can have a negative impact on the environment if not handled responsibly and as such, on all of our trips we go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive - after all, there are also many good things that the traveller can bring.

We keep the group size to a maximum of 10 which is particularly important when visiting delicate ecosystems such as the Orinoco Delta on day 12. There is an abundance and variety of wildlife, birdlife and fish which thrive in the wetlands and flooded swamp forests of the Orinoco Delta. Exploring this region by canoe not only gives us an insight into the lives of the local indigenous Warao people who navigate their way around on handmade canoes but also minimises the human impact on this fragile site.

When you take one of our trips, we make a contribution to “Carbon Clear” – an organisation devoted to ‘offsetting’ or ‘neutralising’ harmful greenhouse gas emissions caused by your flight. This is done by funding projects across the world that will reduce greenhouse gases on your behalf through sustainable energy or rainforest restoration.

Community

In Venezuela we use local ground handlers - this means that all the operational costs go directly into the local economy and helps to improve employment opportunities in remote regions. By incorporating homestays, locally owned hotels, family run restaurants and the services of guides and drivers into our itineraries, we ensure that money you spend on your trip goes directly into the local economy and local communities benefit from tourism.

On this particular trip we will be in a wide variety of accommodation ranging from some smart and characterful hotels and lodges to 2 nights (on Lake Maracaibo and at Angel Falls) in much simpler accommodation where facilities are shared and sleeping will be in hammocks. This allows for greater access to smaller communities and more isolated regions.

We recognise the importance of interaction with smaller communities and for this reason on day 5 when we head up into the Andes where there will be opportunities en route to stop over and share drinks and delicacies with the locals of these Andean Villages. On Day 13 in the Orinoco Delta we will spend the afternoon visiting some local Warao people in order to gain a glimpse into their traditional way of life. Such experiences can prove rewarding and enriching for both parties.

In order to facilitate an enduring support structure for the communities we visit, and to show a commitment to these values, in January 2009 we set up a charitable foundation through which we can directly channel funds to both existing NGOs and our own development projects. In addition to organising ethically sensitive tours, having our own charitable foundation allows us to raise money – through the cost of our tours, charity trips and fund raising events – which can then be used to fund various projects in education, sanitation, reforestations and a number of other important issues facing developing communities.
