2 Reviews of Montenegro hiking holiday, mountain expedition

4 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The mountainous landscape of Montenegro was beautiful and surprisigly green and lush. Climbing the different peaks each day, and seeing amazing views in all directions, was very special. We enjoyed swimming in the lakes and picking the wild blueberries and raspberries along the way. It was interesting to hear about
the history of Montenegro from our guide and the night we spent in a traditional village house with delicious home made food was definitely a highlight.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The different hikes are quite demanding and require a good level of fitness. Some of the paths were narrow with rocky sections so experience of climbing and walking over rough terrain is useful. The higher altitude could also be a factor for some people. It is helpful to have a torch as some Katuns have basic facilities and are not well lit at night - others are very comfortable. It can also be cooler in the evenings so a warm layer is necessary.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The Katuns and the guide definitely benefit from the hikers as well as the enterprising local family offering food and accommodation. The first area we visited was, however, rapidly developing as a ski area and the new road, tunnel
and ski facilities will have a big impact on the area. I hope Montenegro makes
an effort to protect it’s environment for the future.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was fascinating to travel to a lesser known destination and to learn something of the area. I would definitely recommend the experience.

the beautiful views during the hikes especially in the Prokletije mountains

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

As the altitude is quite high, make sure you have some warmer clothes especially for the night. Bring repellent. Hiking sticks proved to be very helpful.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I have hiked a lot but the views in Montenegro are one of the best. While the accommodation and food are rather basic, you will be taken care of very well and simple is good. Our guide Radonja was very knowledgeable about Montenegro, its history, culture and nature. His English was perfect. He was on a mission to make the week memorable and he definitely oversucceeded. It was a total relax from my busy city life. Exactly what I needed.
