Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
Hiking in Peru is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, where possible we will use local transport such as buses rather than private transfers. In Peru we mainly book small-scale, low key accommodation options for our clients. Mainly clients will stay in Pousada's which are historical buildings that have restored to sustain tourism.
In our office in sunny Brighton we work hard to recycle as much as we possibly can. We even buy our paper off the same company we recycled it with resulting in a closed loop system. As we provide our staff with a healthy lunch every day, we also collect our food waste for compost so that it doesn’t end up in the land fill.
We encourage our customers to be responsible travellers in Peru by including a document with their confirmation on topics to think about when they're away. This covers wildlife and fauna, how to prevent destruction through sensible buying of local artifacts made of rare wood or posing for photos with wildlife and interfering with it's nature habitat. Also included is a 'Keeping it Beautiful' section which reminds and encourages our customers to not litter, leaving rocks and plants where they are and trying to set a good example for other tourists and locals alike.
People
Our local partners actively participate in donation campaigns to send clothes or foodstuff to different provinces in the country, such as the highest cities in Puno and Cusco. They have worked on community based charity projects such as collecting 475kg of plastic lids, to get wheelchairs for a local Church. When travelling to Lake Titicaca you will have the opportunity to sample the local way of life, purchase crafts, try local dishes and your money will go direct to supporting this traditional community.
In Peru we give our customers the opportunity to donate to a local project. Project Peru is a small, lively, totally voluntary UK-based charity. They offer food, clothes, shelter, education, healthcare and fun to those who live in their children’s refuge in the desert shanty towns of Lima.
We work with registered providers of the Inca Trail, supporting the porters and guides, offering fair wages and job security. Using experienced guides they educate on the responsible ways to trek, clear up after yourself and look after the surroundings on what is now a very busy and popular trek.
Hotels are locally run and owned, with clear sustainable practices, this means you will be supporting the local communities and not staying in chain hotels that impact on utilities for locals such as water and do not adhere to quotas, which in certain areas is limited in supply for all to use.
