Description of Sri Lanka highlights tour

This tailor-made tour of Sri Lanka proves that good things really do come in small packages, combining the countryís main highlights in just eight-days. Thereís a few local twists along the way too. What better way to start your trip than with a local family homestay, learning to cook traditional Sri Lankan dishes in their curry kitchen?

This tailor-made tour combines a selection of two to three-day mini Sri Lankan adventures to create a compact, yet wonderfully adventurous trip rooted in local culture. If youíd prefer to spend an additional day or two in each place or skip one of the suggested activities, no problems; this trip can be tailored and tweaked to suit your individual interests.

Youíll enjoy sipping tea and walking the trails around the tea estates of Nurwara Eliya, visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and jump on board a train through the mountains of Ella. While youíre there why not challenge yourself with a hike to the top of Adamís Peak? More gentle options are available too.

Youíll need to keep your binoculars to hand as you explore Yala National Park on the lookout for its famous elephants and leopards and youíll finish your trip in style with a traditional high tea in crumbling colonial Colombo.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sri Lanka highlights tour

Environment

During this itinerary you visit Nuwara Eliya and Ella where you stay in colonial guesthouses and hotels. These types of buildings have been protected by tourism to the area and have been kept to their original style.

We also include a train journey in this itinerary from Nuwara Eliya to Ella which is a low-carbon way of travelling with minimal impact to the environment.

You also get to visit Yala National Park which is a protected area of land which is helping preserve the animals and wildlife that live in this area. We have chosen Yala as it is a responsible park and due to tourism is highly protected by the Sri Lankan government safeguarding the animals who reside within. Our guides and staff are trained on how best to protect the flora and fauna and our customers are also informed on this via our 'how to be a responsible traveller' document.

Community

During this itinerary you stay with a local family in a homestay in Kandy where the family will make you feel at home and teach you how to cook traditional Sri Lankan dishes. This is a great support to the local families here as it gives them a steady income from tourism. Also, our drivers know the best places to stop for food/drinks/snacks and will stop at small places where the locals will profit from much needed income.

Our local partner also runs a lot of charity projects in Sri Lanka and supports many local communities. They have funded include providing food and rations to local charities, helping restore the homes of some of Sri Lanka's most needy, and paying for cancer drugs for patients at some local hospitals. In 2008, they provided emergency lights and installed lights at a girls home in Nugegoda. In 2013 they bought 40 new mattresses for an retirement home near Colombo. Other projects that they have funded include providing food and rations to local charities, helping restore the homes of some of Sri Lanka's most needy, and paying for cancer drugs for patients at some local hospitals.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The hike up Ella Rock

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Donít waste any time in Colombo. Book hotels based upon recommendations if possible. There is a huge variety of quality at apparently the same standard. Old colonial is no longer necessarily the best.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

A mixture of all

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant!
