Description of Vietnam discovery tour

In just under three weeks this tailor-made tour of Vietnam will take you into the colourful heart of the country, through chaotic cities and into rural communities.

This trip is all about seeing beyond the country’s main highlights. Yes, you’ll explore Old Hanoi and watch the lanterns sparkle on the water in the beautiful, ancient Hoi An, but you’ll also help on a working farm in Hue and swap Halong Bay for neighbouring Bai Tu Long Bay. Just as beautiful as its better-known neighbour, the waters, islands and limestone karsts of Bai Tu Long Bay still retain an untouched magic. Staying onboard a traditional Chinese junk ship here is a highlight of this tour.

You’ll also have the opportunity to visit local tribal communities in hills of rural Vietnam, raft through lush green valleys and experience the warm hospitality of a family homestay. Vietnam is a feast for all the senses, not least your tastebuds, and delicious street food will be waiting to tempt you at every turn.

This trip can be tailor made to suit you, and you can piece together a variety of short experiences to create your perfect, unforgettable Vietnamese adventure.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

We specialise in small-scale, authentic accommodation full of local character. Because our accommodation is small, the environmental impact is lower than if you were to stay in a large resort. We’re particularly fond of our beach bungalows on beautiful Palm Island. Made from natural materials, the resort owners work hard to support the local marine life by minimising their own impact on the natural environment. They’ve already received some positive feedback from the local fishermen for their efforts.

Throughout this itinerary you’ll travel by a variety of different transport methods. While we use private cars for the smaller transfers, you’ll also travel by shared minibus and public train for some of the longer ones. The overnight train journey from Hanoi to Hue is a real winner, bringing you closer to the local people and cutting down your carbon footprint at the same time.

Meanwhile, at home in our office in Brighton we are dedicated recyclers and have teamed up with a local business to recycle our food waste.

Community

We believe in putting people first and we’re really proud of the excursion near Hue included in this itinerary. You’ll escape the city and lend a hand on a local farm in the Vietnamese countryside. Not only will you gain a greater insight into the daily life of much of Vietnam’s rural population, you’ll also be putting money into the pockets of the local people.

In Hanoi you’ll explore the mesmerising Old Quarter with the help of a local guide, who’ll also help you learn the local lingo. Just knowing a few words and phrases will help you get closer to the local culture as you continue your journey through Vietnam.

Throughout this itinerary we only use local guides and drivers, making for a more rewarding experience. There’s no knowledge like local knowledge!

We also support a local project in Vietnam, the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. This grassroots charity has been reaching out to children in crisis throughout Vietnam since 2003.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Experiencing and witnessing village life and enjoying the scale and splendour of Phong Na National Park. Saying that every sight, smell, sound and taste
throughout Vietnam was a feast for the senses. My third eye (camera lens) didn't have time to blink !

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Heat and humidity levels are fatiguing and can make cycling and walking an ordeal, so plan your schedule and timing of visits.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We respected local customs and supported community craft-makers wherever possible.
The level of shoreline fishing/plastic pollution north of Duong Dong in Phu Quoc was disconcerting - The Shells Resort is a fantastic and modern beachfront
development, yet we didn't place one foot in the sea after spotting fish hooks and lures on the sandy strip - staff did attempt to clean-up the cordoned-off area
but tidal waves defeated their efforts - a global problem which if unchecked will inevitably impact on the local economy and tourism industry !

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent and very memorable.

Yes as local people were involved in our tours. The corporate hotels were not up to speed on single use plastics and re-use of towels etc though.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole holiday was memorable and thank you for introducing us to the tour operator. They did a suburb job of given us a fantastic holiday at an affordable price in a very short timescale.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You don't have to worry about tipping. If you want to tip tip in small dollar bills. 3000 dongs are equivalent to about £1.00 so if you are using local currency you will need a fast amount of notes as they don't have coins in their currency.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were so any, it's hard to choose. But certainly, the 2 day junk trip in Halong Bay, the caves and cycling in the Phong Nha national park, the day cycling round the rice fields near Hue and meeting the local farmers and fishermen, Hoi An and our cooking class and the unforgettable Saigon after dark Vespa tour.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you know exactly what you want to see and do - the country is so big from north to south and there is so much to cover.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

To a certain extent in that we used local guides and smaller organisations

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Outstanding: The itinerary was tailor made and Paul clearly listened and understood exactly what we were looking for. The organisation with the local
partners was excellent and everything ran to perfection. Excellent hotels and homestays, comfortable transport and most of the activities/excursions met or
exceeded our expectations.
