Description of Southern Circuit of Peru tour

This southern circuit of Peru tour journeys deep into the country's heart and soul on a 12 day trip. As well as iconic Machu Picchu, bustling Cusco and Lake Titicaca you have the opportunity to get off the beaten track to understand how traditions and history shape modern day life.

After a day discovering Lima and recovering from your flight, head to the beautiful "White city" of Arequipa with it's backdrop of volcanoes and sparkling white colonial buildings. Journey through a national reserve with wild herds of vicuña to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world and home to nesting Condors. A dawn rise allows you to experience Condor's flying just over your head. Soak in natural thermal springs or hike to nearby Uyu Uyu ruins. Travel overland to Lake Titicaca, in the high plains. You'll learn the fascinating history of the floating reed islands and delve into the different cultures that survive to this day.

The scenic journey to Cusco takes you into the valleys where the ancient inca capital of Cusco lies; a fascinating melting pot of Inca, Colonial and modern day cultures. Enjoy jaw-dropping views of snow capped Andes on your journey through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu. The jewel in Cusco's crown and well deserved. Our fantastic local guides will bring it to life and help you make the most of your time here.

For the adventurous there are opportunities to add on activities including hiking, white water rafting and biking to name a few. There are many more Inca ruins to discover for the archeological fans and a myriad of cultural experiences that can be added to this tailor-made itinerary.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Southern Circuit of Peru tour

It is incredibly important to us to sustain the environment on the trips that we do to these countries. For example at Machu Picchu in Peru, we work with Inkaterra who have been working for 40 years to protect the environment and local communities through various initiatives including the creation of reserves, education on sustainable fishing and biodiversity monitoring. Every guest at Inkaterra has a 100% Carbon Neutral hotel stay.

We encourage people to travel overland where possible (a fantastic experience in itself in South America for the views and sense of space you get)
We urge clients to focus their trip on a few places rather than trying to connect many destinations by flights.

Some of our suppliers have foundations or projects that benefit from the hotel/cruise boat or lodge that they operate and we prefer to use these where possible. We explain this to our clients and indeed it can be used as a big selling point throughout the trip planning process.

We actively support community based projects. For every Peru booking we will donate £10 to the Living Heart Foundation who have several excellent projects that reach out to the remote Andean regions where children often have poor nutrition and education. They have a café in the town of Ollantaytambo which is a stopping off point for Machu Picchu. We encourage our clients to go there for a coffee or to buy some of the locally produced textiles that this region is famous for.

When creating our tailormade trips we always try to feature hotels or lodges that have a social or environmental project attached to them. For example Hotel Sol y Luna in Peru has its own foundation which helps children in the local area by giving them a chance of an “education, good health, happiness and a brighter future”.

We also work with a small company who take clients off the beaten track in Lima called Pax on Board. Clients can visit a fishing village with a local guide and learn about how important this industry is to the local economy. They eat lunch in a local restaurant. This is always done on a private basis and so usually our clients are the only tourists there.
