Responsible tourism: Spain self drive holiday, Bilbao, San Sebastian & Pamplona

We live in the land that we promote and we love its natural beauty. This is one of the main reasons our goal is to preserve it, and we encourage all visitors to act responsibly, respecting the wildlife, to ensure that the environmental impacts of our activities are kept to a minimum.

There are a lot of protected areas and natural parks in the Basque Country as Urkiola Natural Park or Gorbea Natural Park, where wild life is delicate and need to be protected. For example, the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is a strongly important place for birding, so, in order not to alter these protected species, we all have to be respectful in our walks over the area, leaving the place as we found it at our arrival. And furthermore, if you are fond of birding, do not miss the Urdaibai Bird Center, where will find further information about all the species and the particular conditions in the reserve.

We reuse and recycle paper. We use ecological paper in all our publicity brochures and other documents to do a responsible use of the natural resources, and we do not print anything except the necessary to save paper.

Besides, on arrival our guests are given information on recycling in this part of Spain, explaining tips about the different kinds of containers and what they are for, and suggestions for how to reduce water use that they can follow both during their holidays or once they are back home. Spain has a well-developed recycling system that is easy to use and available to everybody. You can find recycling bins, receptacles, and containers all over the country, from the biggest cities to the tiniest villages. All you have to do is look for the convenient color-coded curb-side containers placed everywhere. With the amount of recycling containers scattered all over, you have little to no excuse not to recycle in Spain. However, these bins usually come in multicolored groups of four, and unless you know the specific vocabulary surrounding them, it can be a little confusing the first couple times you have to throw stuff away, that is why you will be given a full detailed list of all this kind to containers

With all the documents, we also give them tips and suggestions to visit local projects and on walking without impacting fragile environments.

One of the main goals of our company is to promote local culture, with its traditions, gastronomy and everything that makes this land unique.

We explore the Basque Country in a responsible way, in small groups, taking our time to know the authentic local life, having real contact with local people and its projects. We really believe that when all these things are brought closer to the visitors and they realize it is something with a high cultural value, it is easier to preserve it over time.

When booking, all our guests are advised to visit a website with all the information about the social, historical and political situation in the Basque Country, linked as well from our website. Our land has a peculiar history and we want people coming here to know as much as possible about the culture, so they can enjoy it better.

In the welcoming packet is recommended to visit some cultural spots to go deep in the tradition of this special land. To give you an example, you will be highly recommended to visit a Salt Valley, where salt has been produced uninterruptedly for 6,500 years, and where a non-profit institution, established in 2009, recovers, preserves and enhances this singular landscape. Another example of this unique environment is the Pozalagua Cave, which although been quite unknown, contains one of the biggest concentrations of helictites in the world.

In order to help visitors to interact with locals they are given a common phrases document in Euskera and Spanish to help them to encourage the challenge. We also encourage them to eat locally and will direct them to local markets and shops that are accessible along the way.
