Description of Colorado activity holiday, USA

Colorado is best-known for its winter sports, but during the summer months it is truly the outdoor adventure capital of North America. This fantastic small-group tour takes you around major Colorado destinations including Aspen, Denver and the Rocky Mountain National Park, trying out a range of fun and challenging activities against the stunning backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

The trip begins in the state capital of Denver, a lively city with a year-round sporting calendar and a local delicacy you’re well-advised to research before tasting – the Rocky Mountain Oyster. You’ll move on to Great Sand Dunes National Park, via some awe-inspiring scenery known as the ‘Garden of the Gods’, to sand board down some of the biggest dunes in the country. From here, it’s a few hours’ drive to the historic mining town of Durango, which now boasts a range of chic restaurants and carefully restored Victorian buildings.

In Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll see the incredible cliff-dwellings of the Anasazi, before continuing on to Telluride. Here in this popular outdoor sports resort you’ll spend half a day on a mountain biking route tailored to your abilities above Box Canyon.

More unforgettable moments arise from trekking through the magnificent Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park, and an awesome whitewater rafting trip along the Arkansas River from Aspen, through Class III rapids and idyllic landscapes. Before returning to Denver via Boulder, there’s time to wind down with some more scenic hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you want a holiday that will leave your heart pounding, and your friends back home green with envy, then get your kicks in Colorado.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Colorado activity holiday, USA

We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit both the places and communities we visit as well as our travellers. It is important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National Parks and monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should and must be treated with respect.

We have created a 'Travellers' Code of Conduct' to help prepare and inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they could have on a destination. The code includes tips on everything from handling wildlife encounters to how you can help to conserve precious natural resources. Our tour leaders will explain this code of conduct during the first night’s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it throughout the tour.

This code includes following the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethic, this is an international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the impact on the National Parks and other wilderness areas that we visit. Some key guidelines we follow include keeping to existing trails, staying in official campgrounds and disposing of all waste responsibly and recycling whatever we can.

We are proud supporters of Bay Area Wilderness Training (www.bawt.org) a charity based in Oakland California which works to connect disadvantaged children in the local urban area with the great outdoors. Their work helps to provide these young people with life changing experiences which they can
apply to everyday life. Everyone booking with Grand American Adventures has the option to donate £1/$1/€1 to support this well-deserved charity and we will match this donation.

On this tour we have contracted with local providers for the sandboarding activity, biking tour with a local guide, rafting with a local guide to ensure tourist money is filtered back into the state of Colorado. It also ensures that future guide training is maintained within Colorado.

On this tour we use local accommodation, eat in small family-run restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings economic benefit to the local communities that we visit. By keeping the tour to one American State only we are able to reduce the amount of driving and fuel consumption used on this tour.
